4H Land Judging winners named at Moose Lodge event
The eighth annual 4-H Land Judging at Daryl Pagel farm Washington Township drew 61 participants, with top inexperienced team including Bobby Bohren Joann Rufener Judy Swedlund and coach Beatrice Ackerman. The top experienced team scored 870.5 led by Nancy Streiff David Wyttenbach and Dan Wyttenbach. Top individuals were David Smith Dan Wyttenbach Rick Reuter Bradley Timm Chris Meier David Wyttenbach Diane Deininger Larry Jeglum Rena Ruff and Susan Wyttenbach. Awards include prize trip for top teams and individuals to be announced later.

Fire gutts Foxen home at former Stauffacher Cheese site
Early morning blaze completely destroyed the Foxen family residence on Route 4 in Sylvester Township. Mr and Mrs Foxen and their two sons were away attending an outdoor movie and returned as Monroe volunteers battled the fire. Firefighters fought for three hours with water hauled from Sylvester Creek. only the clothing worn by the family remains. Neighbors provided some aid while the Foxens stay with relatives. The family carried minimal insurance and had moved from the Dwight Burri farm last December days after purchasing the former factory six miles northeast of Monroe.
