Wisconsin Passes July Fourth Toll Record On Road Deaths

The Associated Press reports Wisconsin recorded 26 traffic deaths over the July 4 weekend, raising the 1966 total to 457, five more than last year. The toll included multiple fatal crashes, many with young victims, as authorities noted most deaths involved single-car accidents and extended from Friday evening to Monday midnight.

Record July Fourth traffic toll hits 567 deaths nationwide

During a three day observance traffic crashes killed 567 people nationwide with drownings and boating accidents pushing total accidental deaths to 834. The National Safety Council warned the toll could exceed prior records as officials noted legislative progress for road safety.

Urban Renewal Plan Report Slated Tonight

Mayor Walter R. Ekum announced a complete report on Monroe's Urban Renewal project status will be given to news media tonight. The press release about federal aid participation will be distributed to newspapers and radio representatives at the City Council meeting at 7 30 p.m. in City Hall, with 15 to 20 resolutions expected for consideration.

Music Lifts City Fourth of July Concert Despite Incomplete Bandshell

The City Band played traditional and popular tunes to celebrate Independence Day in Monroe with thousands attending from parked cars on surrounding streets. Fireworks sponsored by the City and Chamber of Commerce followed a largely peaceful weekend despite local accidents and vandalism reports. Milfred Isely of Gratiot caught a 31.2 pound catfish at Yellowstone Lake during a three day holiday crowd of about 10 000 people. Clarence R Benkett district game manager said 430 campers filled the lake area with many visitors engaging in swimming waterskiing boating and fishing.

Brodhead Man Suffered Facial Injuries In County Crash

A Brodhead man Keith Schwartzlow aged 22 sustained facial fractures and lacerations when his car hit a culvert abutment on Decatur Road, three miles northwest of Brodhead. He was treated at St. Clare Hospital and released.
