Farm Barn Burned Near Lamont. Loss Partly Insured

A 36x60 foot barn on the Marie Barnes farm west of Lamont burned last night. Orville Anderson tenants say 37 cattle, plus sheep, lambs and pigs, were saved. Fire likely started from frost-covered wires. four-area alarms and subzero weather hampered efforts.

Blood Unit Due During February Drives in Green County

The Red Cross Bloodmobile will visit Green County in February with two drives. Brodhead on Feb 17 from 2 to 6 pm at the Brodhead Bank aims for 50 pints, Monroe on Feb 28 from 1 30 to 6 30 pm in the Municipal Building Community Room aims for 115 pints.

Mothers Prepare March in Monroe for March of Dimes

Undaunted by bitter weather, Monroe mothers will march through residential areas to raise funds for the March of Dimes. Collectors begin at 5 p.m. and continue past 8 p.m., with porch lights requested for warm receptions. Browntown also hosts a 7 to 8 p.m. march.

VFW Leader Urges Resumption of Bombing Vietnam

Andy Borg national commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars told Pennsylvania delegates at a mid winter meeting in Bedford Springs that he wired President Johnson asking for bombing to be resumed. The message came one day before renewed air attacks on North Vietnam.

Old State Capitol Restoration Plans Unfold in Belmont

Multiple Mishaps Reported in Albany Area Crashes

Moore the 19 year old driver from Albany sustained injuries in a collision with a wrecker driven by 38 year old Harry Hanson two miles southeast of Albany on Atkinson Road. The wrecker and car suffered damage. An ambulance delay in sub zero temperatures worsened the ordeal. Deputies also noted a second two vehicle crash near New Glarus involving Robert Alderman and Raymond Yaun with passenger Sheryl Hauge head bump. Other weekend incidents included a Beloit driver’s car hitting a bridge due to power steering failure, a Monticello driver hitting a fence, and several minor Monroe incidents involving steering issues and backing vehicles. Police logged multiple Saturday accidents around Monroe and surrounding roads.

Johnson Launches Peace Move Amid New Vietnam Bombing

President Johnson announced a resumption of bombing in North Vietnam to save lives of U S and allied troops and urged a U N Security Council meeting to pursue diplomacy. He said the pause’s end does not end the pursuit of peace and hinted at possible talks. The report follows a separate Supreme Court review decision on Hoffa.

Youth to Study Recreation in Monroe Meeting

The Monroe Young Republicans call a 7 30 p m February 9 meeting at the First National Bank community room for all local youth to discuss ideas for solving the lack of activities. James Beer proposes a youth led effort with adult groups overseeing progress across three future meetings. The group also promotes Victory in Vietnam buttons approved by the State Federation.

Power outage hits Lafayette County farms

A southwest portion of Lafayette County suffered a power outage yesterday due to cold weather affecting transmission lines. Full service was restored about 2 30 p.m. Most farmers had finished morning milking before the outage.

Open House at Monroe City Hall Draws Hundreds in Cold

More than 500 people including officials toured Monroe's new Municipal Building during a two day open house amid sub zero winds. Mayor Ekum plans a spring repeat as Sen. Gordon LeRoelle praised the town's progress and nursing school prospects. He noted the clinic and hospital expansions and urged continued local leadership.
