In Milwaukee 37 people were taken into custody after about 270 protesters, largely women, overwhelmed a downtown store. They smashed display cases and chanted for charge accounts as they protested Milwaukee County’s rejection of extra winter clothing allowances.
U S Marine units announced redeployments from Vietnam this week. To El Toro California are Fighter Attack Squadron 542 and attack Squadron 223. To Santa Ana California is Heavy Helicopter Squadron 361. To Camp Pendleton California proceed 3rd Amtrac Battalion 1st Anti Tank Battalion Cadre Detachment Force Logistics Command Detachment 9th Communications Battalion Counter Mortar Platoon.
AP dispatches report rumors in Canton that Chinese Premier Chou En-lai is seriously ill. Street committees denounced the rumors as intentional factional stir, while authorities warned of punishment for spreaders.
British Prime Minister Harold Wilson travels to the United States to meet President Nixon for two days of talks aimed at recasting the special relationship and seeking a better life for world peoples rather than increasing power. Report notes Irish missionaries face deportation from Nigeria and Israel welcomes Nixon arms pledges to Israel amid Arab protests.
The National Commission on Product Safety said 122 color television models have been exploding or catching fire at above average rates. The Electronics Industries Association charged the move creates an unfair competitive advantage for certain manufacturers.
Nomination papers at city and county clerks offices continue with several new candidates and contests planned for the spring election. Leonard J. Haney, plant comptroller for Moore's Business Forms in Niagara Falls New York, seeks First Ward Alderman. Harold Snively, incumbent, will not seek re election after six years as alderman and chair of key committees. Haney joins local groups including United Fund and Cheese City Toastmasters, with leadership roles and a long career at Moore's from 1950 onward. He was born in Brooklyn and is married to Jane A Hall.
President Nixon used television to veto a large education health appropriation, calling it inflationary and excessive. He argued the government cannot spend that much this year and signed the veto in a 11 minute address. Congress must override with a two thirds vote in both houses.
Arthur P. Benkert 85 longtime Monroe clothier died 5:30 p.m. Monday Jan 26 at St. Clare Hospital after Dec 30 hospitalization and October decline. He ran Benkert and Stauffacher era in clothing, later Benkert's Clothing with his son Josef J. and Lyle Sickinger. He was honored in 1960 at the Wisconsin Men's Apparel Show and held civic roles including Monroe Country Club director and 43 years at Commercial and Savings Bank. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and member of St John's United Church of Christ born January 18, 1885 in Albany.
The Green County Agricultural Chest approved a 1970 budget of 5775 and elected 24 new directors at its Monday evening meeting in the county Agricultural building. The budget increases 400 over last year, driven mainly by World Food Exposition costs. Certificates were presented to 12 individuals or organizations. New directors include Mrs. Myron Hanson and Clinton Zettle among others, expanding the board to 74 members.
Leonard Haney Moore Business Forms plant comptroller was elected president of United Fund Inc of Monroe at its annual meeting in the First National Bank Community Room. Jack Fernan retires as president. Keith Seward and Ernest Gebhardt Jr. elected first vice president and treasurer respectively. Mrs Ray Gordon will continue as secretary. Directors named Dorothy Johnson Ben Campa John McIlhaney for three-year terms. Additional directors filled unexpired terms of Fernan and Rev Gerritt E Mouw.
A fast moving snow shower spread over Wisconsin overnight producing about an inch statewide. Lone Rock measured about three inches while Pewaukee saw two. Milwaukee and Juneau reported one to two inches as the rest of the state averaged around an inch. Highs Monday ranged from 38 in Eau Claire to 24 in Superior with early readings from 5 at Hurley to 28 in Milwaukee. Overnight lows varied from 3 at Superior to 28 in Milwaukee.
Green Bay receiver Boyd Dowler will appear in Monroe for two charity events on Thursday. He first speaks at the Monroe Community Center from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Proceeds aid the March of Dimes. Autographs available for a $1 donation per child. Later he attends Kantro Night at Marco's Supper Club with dinner around 7 p.m. and entertainment until closing. Mrs. Madie Stauffacher and Terry Buening co chair.
