RACINE AP Firemen and the City Council accepted a contract settlement after a three day walkout, with stations resuming duty. Jay Schwartz, attorney for Firefighters Local 321 AFL CIO, said both sides voted separately and approved the accord.
Chicago Fire Commissioner says the two deaf teens died after a Sunday morning blaze at the downtown Conrad Hilton Hotel. Firemen tried mouth-to-mouth resuscitation but the smoke overcame them as responders opened the door. The victims were identified as 17-year-olds with no chance of survival. In Tel Aviv, Israeli jets bombed Egyptian positions along the Suez Canal for over an hour, denying Arab claims of downed planes and radar station attacks.
Sen. William Proxmire blasted the Air Force as unsafe at any load and called for grounding all 10 C5 transport planes in service. He urged the service to refuse new aircraft after deeming the C5s defective.
Governor William T. Cahill says his 19 year old son John was arrested on marijuana possession charges after a Philadelphia visit and a highway patrol stop. He hopes his son will be treated like any other young man in similar circumstances.
Interior Secretary Walter Hickel says Nixon administration will have polluters shoulder much of the expense to clean up air and water. He notes the payment will be the cost of doing business for those industries.
A crash near Poza Rica killed fourteen Mexican newsmen and five others during a campaign tour for presidential candidate Luis Echeverria. One survivor is seriously injured. The incident occurred as the party toured the coastal region northeast of Mexico City.
Mrs. Wilbert G. Gust of Belleville was awarded 110000 by a Dane County Circuit Court jury for injuries from a 1968 traffic crash near Middleton. Judge Maloney will consider motions seeking changes in the judgment and the trial procedures.
Theodore C Weiss of Route 4 Box 68 declares his bid for the 18th district supervisor seat to replace incumbent James Flanagan who will not seek re election The candidate is Monroe Civil Defense director since 1966 and works as an engineering assistant at Industrial Combustion He also runs Pinecrest farm and holds a ham radio license and pilot certificate. Flanagan will not run again citing other commitments with four years on the board and current treasurer role at Green County Mutual Insurance Co
Ross Lancaster age 25 underwent open heart surgery at University Hospitals Madison. He was returned to surgery for an emergency procedure and remains in intensive care. His wife Elaine Zee, daughter Kim, and parents Mr. and Mrs. Charles Lancaster visit daily.
The Green County Agricultural Chest will hold its annual meeting tonight at 8 p.m. in the county agricultural building. The event features election of directors, presentation of the 1970 budget, and certificates of appreciation for longtime service. Marvin Siedschlag will present the program, followed by a dairy lunch.
President Thieu defended his regime and urged continued allied aid while insisting South Vietnam must gradually achieve self sufficiency. He warned against allowing Communist forces to exploit freedoms and pledged independence from any ally policy not aligned with national interests. Meanwhile, U S B52 bombers carried out heavy raids on North Vietnamese supply depots in Laos A Shau Valley and near the Cambodian border, aiming at trucks and warehouses and leaving 14 North Vietnamese soldiers reported killed.
The Monroe High School Concert and Symphonic Bands directed by Joseph Kieralde perform January 28 at 8 p.m. in the Junior High Auditorium. Concert Band opens with Haydn and Mozart works. Symphonic Band follows with Sousa, Arnold, and McBeth pieces, featuring five senior soloists. Tickets at the door.
Fred Dettwiler, longtime Monroe farmer and farm organization leader, was honored at a family birthday dinner Sunday Jan 25 at the home of John and Dorothy Rieder Route 2 Monroe. He marked his 93rd birthday Jan 23 and recently moved into his children’s home due to health. Dettwiler helped organize numerous agricultural groups and earned a 1960 Wisconsin Farm Bureau Service to Agriculture award. He has four children nine grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. Attending the dinner were John and Dorothy Rieder Gilbert Dettwiler Henry Dettwiler and Wallace Schaber.
Gerald Earleywine was named first president of the AMPI Sugar River District at a Janesville meeting. The district covers four western Green County townships and seven western Rock County townships with Lyle Stall as secretary treasurer and Alvin Francis as vice president. Three directors were chosen and twelve voting delegates elected to represent about 300 farms, as AMPI expands to include 26,000 farms across the United States and Canada.
Nominations close tomorrow at 5 p.m. with several races forming. Clifford Reasa seeks mayor against John Upmann while incumbent Walter R. Ekum retires. Four aldermen seats open as Harold Snively and August Burgy retire. Robert E. Tschudy may file. Jerry Coplien and Eleanor B. Frederick also filed papers. Niederberger enters fifth ward race.
Mild temperatures and sun broke through cloudy skies Monday as county roads thawed after a weekend of treacherous driving. A major tie up on Highway 69 north of Monroe and a wreck near Juda cut power to the area for over 30 minutes Sunday evening. Deputies aided stranded motorists while road crews salted highways and township roads stayed listed back page note.
