Two Minneapolis Fraternal Order of the Eagles chapters formally disavowed the national whites-only membership rule. The move followed a city committee adoption of a policy barring liquor licenses to groups restricting membership by race or creed and came after the national body voted to keep the clause at a convention in August.
The Wisconsin Assembly approved a bill easing penalties for marijuana use and tightening penalties for drug peddlers. It would revise narcotics laws giving judges more sentencing discretion and allow lighter penalties for first offenders or those who use marijuana as an experiment, sending the measure to the Senate.
Washington AP reports cousin Minnie Pearl of the Grand Ole Opry is set to appear as a witness in three days of congressional hearings starting January 20. Others named include Johnny Carson Joe Namath Mickey Mantle and Pat Boone though only Pearl has accepted so far.
In Saigon the Army served court martial charges on Spec. 5 Robert Lawrence of Atlanta for defying a sergeant’s order on December 29 to stop preparing a nightly newscast and escort soldiers to their quarters. The charges come amid claims of censorship by two GI newscasters, though the Army cited a non censorship incident.
EDGARTOWN Mass AP five young women return to a county courthouse to recount the last night in the life of Mary Jo Kopechne. The group includes Rosemary Keough Maryellen Lyons Nancy Teenenbaum Susan Teenenbaum and Esther Newberg all DC residents who once worked for Robert F. Kennedy during his campaign.
Investigators say two close allies of the late Joseph A. Jock Yablonski have received threatening phone calls since the slayings of the UMW reformer his wife and daughter. State police said the first report came from Marion Pellegrini an official of UMW District 5 from Canonsburg.
Senator Robert P. Griffin predicts Congress will not concede to the White House to prevent a veto of the 19.7 billion health education and welfare appropriation bill. He says Nixon may veto the measure, his first, and expects enough Republicans to support the administration.
Negotiations between the National Railway Labor Conference and four AFL-CIO unions resume today after shop craft workers, numbering about 48 000, rejected a two year 68 cent per hour pay raise three weeks ago. The dispute threatens a potential nationwide rail shutdown next week.

The Wisconsin School Music Association sponsored honors bands from 109 Wisconsin high schools will perform Saturday evening January 10 at James Madison Memorial High School. Miles Johnson of St Olaf College directs the project, with rehearsals Friday and Saturday.
