Hearing adjourned in Whiteswater Uni disturbance case

In Elkhorn Wisconsin a fact finding hearing into charges against 14 Negro students from Whitewater State University was adjourned until Thursday after only two witnesses in two days. Ten students faced suspensions for a Dec 16 late night disturbance at a white fraternity house injuring five white members and damaging trophies furniture and the house.

Nixon May Seek Higher Federal Excise Taxes

President Nixon may seek increases in several federal excise taxes to help balance the budget. Government sources say the Treasury has drafted alternatives, including a potential steep cigarette levy, for boosting revenues in fiscal 1971. Some proposals will appear in the budget message January 27.

Wisconsin temperatures to average about 10 degrees below normal from Thursday through Monday. Normal highs range from 18 to 25 in the north and 24 to 29 in the south with lows from minus 1 to 8 above in the north and 6 to 15 above in the south. Minor daily changes expected and total precipitation around one tenth of an inch in light snow flurries or light snow.

First U.S. rocket insured against failure for COMSAT

The Delta rocket, carrying a COMSAT communications satellite, carries a $872000 premium policy. If the launch fails to reach orbit, international underwriters will pay COMSAT $4.57 million, covering 75 percent of its $6.1 million launch investment. The launch is scheduled for 6 10 p m EST.

Wisconsin State Patrol reports interstates generally in good condition this morning. A light snow has made ramps in Tomah area slippery and created slick spots on several main highways across north central, west central and northwest areas. Other regions remain in good driving condition.

Northern Engraving to move Sparta plant operations

The label division plant of Northern Engraving Co. in Holmen will close and transfer production to a recently acquired factory in Greasville. The Sparta based firm announced the relocation plans. A Red Cross Bloodmobile schedule change lists Monticello Zwingli Church Hall 1:30 to 4:30 PM Friday January 9, 1970.

Fire destroys barn and milkhouse killing 28 cows in Mt. Pleasant

A blaze of undetermined origin in 17 below zero temperatures engulfed a barn and milkhouse at the Raymond Hill farm on a town road between Monticello and Albany. Twenty eight cows died. Firefighters from Monticello and Albany faced equipment freezes and delayed alarms. No damage estimate yet.

Monroe approves aerial and pumper trucks for fire department

Monroe voters will see two public hearings on Jan 20. The city plans to buy a 100 foot aerial fire truck and a 1000 gallon per minute pumper, replacing 1953 models. Delivery expected 1972 and 1973 with costs near 75000 for the aerial and 30000 for the pumper. The fire department size will rise from 45 to 48.

Monroe residents plan summer shelter reservations despite cold

Monroe park and recreation director reports 33 reservations by Tuesday for summer 1970 shelter houses across Recreation and Twining parks. An estimated 2260 will use facilities with permits. reservations began January 2 with no user fee except one dollar to make a reservation.
