Cause of Hotel Fire Fatal to 21 Still Unknown

In Jacksonville the Hotel Roosevelt fire left 21 dead and 66 injured during Gator Bowl weekend. Victims died from smoke and fumes with one woman leaping to her death. Rescue efforts included Navy helicopters and city firefighters fighting to reach upper floors.

Cold December Sets Wisconsin Records Across State

A historic December cold wave gripped Wisconsin with overnight lows reaching 21 below at Monroe and 8 below downtown. Milwaukee and Beloit posted December 30 records at 11 below, Lone Rock hit 23 below, and forecasts expect continued frigid conditions with lows 7 to 12 below and a high near 20 tomorrow.

Christmas Tree Blaze Kills Four in Pleasant Prairie

Fire swept a tri level home in Pleasant Prairie killing four members of one family including mother Frances Hansen who saved two daughters and a babysitter. Victims were Clarence Hansen Sr Frances Hansen and two sons Clarence Jr and Kenneth. Two daughters Brenda and Renee and 15 year old Lorraine Gorski escaped through a window with Mrs Hansen. Fire Chief Knutter traced the blaze to a Christmas tree in the living room saying overheated lights likely sparked the fire.

Lim Denies Advising Renk in Wisconsin Senate bid

Robert C. Zimmerman and Wilbur Renk acknowledge frequent letter exchanges but deny or confirm claims that Zimmerman advised Renk to avoid running for the U.S. Senate. Cashman Youth Killed in Illinois Traffic Accident

Thomas Michael Cashman 17 of Monroe died in a two car crash on Highway 12 near Richmond McHenry County. Passenger Andre Herman 17 sustained serious injuries and was treated at St. Clare hospital Monroe. Investigators cited driver error and Herman held on a ticket for failure to control. Lakonia Sinks While Being Toward Gibraltar

The burned-out Lakonia sank in 200 feet of Atlantic water while being towed toward Gibraltar. Capt. Trygve Gaasoe reported the ship listed more on Saturday night and then sank about 260 miles southwest of Gibraltar. Of the 1,041 aboard, 91 are known dead and 64 remain missing.
