James N. Davis 76 Dies at St Clare Hospital

James N. Davis 76 of 2519 10th St. Monore died at 3 10 p m in St Clare Hospital after six months of illness following a stroke He served in Co H 127th Infantry 32nd Division WW I earning the Purple Heart He married Mary Pfister in 1920 and they farmed Browntown before moving to Monroe He was a retired Wisconsin Power and Light employee and is survived by wife three daughters a son two brothers and 15 grandchildren Military graveside rites will be held at Greenwood Cemetery.

Holiday Store Hours To Begin Tomorrow In Monroe

Santa Claus will be available in Monroe evenings until Christmas Eve as stores extend hours. Weekday closings are around 9 p.m. and 9 30 p.m. on Fridays with Christmas Eve closing at 5 p.m. Santa residing in a mobile home by the Green County Courthouse.

17th Fire Victim Dies After Keokuk Tragedy

Mrs. Vera Pilkington a 44 year old Illinois woman of Nauvoo died Monday at Brooke Army Medical Center from burns suffered in the Keokuk Iowa armory fire. She was flown here November 3 with six other victims of the blaze. The tragedy occurred during a square dance festival.

Assemblyman G. Fred Galli spoke at the Green County Ministerial Association meeting in Juda Baptist Church on how bills are introduced and passed and his ties to constituents. Ministers discussed a Religion in American Life program with a tentative Jan 10 hospital meeting.

Brodhead Council Approves Christmas Bonus and Road Plan

The Brodhead City Council approved a $25 Christmas bonus for nine city employees and bills totaling 10 317 10. They set trash pickup days to align with roadway work and agreed to match county funds to raise 16 000 for improving roadways. Building permits were issued to three residents and elm tree removal on private property was urged.

Members of Company B will hold their annual Christmas party Saturday December 11 at 7 30 p m in the Armory. The event is run by the Non Commissioned Officers Club with musical entertainment. Training focused on emergency first aid led by Sgt Frank Dillon. Capt Dwight C Coplien announced the next summer encampment set for June 11 25.

Mrs Kubly Remains In Serious Condition After Crash

Mrs Raymond Kubly Jr of Browntown remains in serious condition at St. Clare Hospital after a Nov 29 traffic crash near the Ralph J Kundert residence on Highway 11 West. An emergency tracheotomy was performed and she is treated intravenously as doctors monitor lung injuries and a collapsed lung. Her husband was driving their car when the east bound vehicle driven by David L Pehl of Monroe caused the collision.

County Lake Project Nearing Completion

Clarence Benkert says the 74 acre Zanders Lake body of water should be finished by weekend weather permitting. After completion the brush clearing in the basin will continue with help from Green County Conservation League and local residents.

Immaculate Conception Observance Closes Catholic Schools

Catholic schools in Madison and across the United States will be closed tomorrow for the feast of the Immaculate Conception a holy day of obligation requiring Mass attendance. Catholics over seven are to abstain from meat today and the rule stands despite any talk of Friday meat restrictions. The feast honors Mary's sinless conception and she is the United States patroness.
