Social Security Benefits to Rise in 1966 for Second District

Rep. Bob Kastenmeier reports 1965 amendments will add about 8 million dollars in 1966 social security payments for the Second District. Total payments reach 48.8 million in 1966 and 55.7 million in 1967 with increases for newly eligible OASDI recipients and expanded Medicare coverage benefiting about 44 thousand seniors locally.

Milwaukee Beer for Viet Nam Misdirected by Postal Rules

Milwaukee airlift plans to ship 1000 cases of beer to troops in South Viet Nam were halted by postal regulations. The Brewery Workers Local 9 and city breweries offered 500 cases each, but officials in Washington said shipments were not permitted. Union secretary Donald Maguire said funds will go to another military project if shipping cannot be arranged.

Taxpayers To Get Late Yule Present

Congress-approved tax cuts deliver a $1.6 billion relief in December with a total $4.7 billion annual impact. Key changes include a 10 to 3 percent cut on local and long distance phone taxes starting Jan 1, auto excise drops to 6 percent and later to 1 percent by 1969, cabaret and admissions taxes repealed, and several other levies phased out Jan 1 with varying annual savings.

Oaktron Strike Ends With Talks Scheduled For Return

Oaktron Industries workers returned to their jobs after a brief strike ended. Union officials delivered a letter urging unconditional rehire and immediate procedures, while management announced a 7 am return and a nine hour weekday five hour Saturday schedule to recover lost production.

Norma Riedel wins her brief Army encounter and her son Robert Schnabel 19 will be home for Christmas. The Army said draftees would not be sent from induction to reception centers between December 22 and 27. Mrs Riedel telegrammed President Johnson and the 5th Army. She called the outcome the answer to a mother's prayer.

Gemini 7 mission pilot Lovell’s rocket roots traced to high school

Milwaukee students recall James A. Lovell Jr.’s early fascination with rockets. The 37 year old Navy lieutenant commander and Frank Borman were set to lift in Gemini 7 to rendezvous with Schirra and Stafford. Prominent locals sent best wishes as Lovell, born in Cleveland, rose from Juneau High School leadership and cafeteria duties to spaceflight.

Monroe Youth Wins Local VFW Voice of Democracy Contest

Jane Schrier, daughter of Mr and Mrs Glenn Schrier, won the local VFW Voice of Democracy contest sponsored by Cecil Jones Post 2312 and its Auxiliary. Second place went to Greg Wagner and third to Beth Matzke with entries from Monroe Juda and surrounding areas. The winner advances to a state contest with a national final possible, prizes include a $5,000 national scholarship and trips.

Monticello Plans Outdoor Christmas Lighting Contest

The Monticello Community Club will sponsor an outdoor Christmas lighting contest with awards for Religious and general displays. Judging is set for Sunday December 19, and the village has already erected its displays.
