Monroe School enrollment rises for 1966 67 term

Enrollment in the Monroe School System is projected to reach about 2,695 for 1966 67, up from 2,639 last year. Senior High holds 870 students, Junior High 420, with Lincoln and East North South schools balancing classes amid transfers and new registrations. The district anticipates stronger graduating classes and contains notes on class sizes and shifting students to balance enrollment.

Rodney Blaser to Antarctic Stint on Research Vessel Eltania

Rodney R Blaser will spend six to nine months in Antarctic waters aboard the research ship Eltania a floating lab strengthened against ice and equipped with anti roll tanks He may study sea bottom elevations currents and general oceanography He will travel from New York to New Zealand attend a conference with international researchers and join a crew of 48 officers and men plus about 38 scientists The voyage range extends from near Argentina to New Zealand

New Teachers Join St. Victor's School Roll

St Victor School welcomes two new male teachers Donald Sorn from Belleville Wisconsin and James Collins from Eau Claire a Loras College graduate joining a staff that begins orientation for a departmentalized program for grades five through eight. Five teachers return from last year including Sister Rose Anthony. Classes start today with a half day and full operation tomorrow.

Little Marci Starts First Grade Day Across Two Schools

Six year old Marci Jo Ackerman rode to Richland Route 2 but ended up at East School. Found by her mother she remained calm and enjoyed her first day, attending both kindergarten and first grade in one day as confusion over school placement unfolded.

R M Bussen reported $28 964 raised in house-to-house canvassing with more pledges to come. Community totals from Monticello New Glarus Argyle and Monroe indicate growing support for the $1 million goal to supplement Sisters of St Agnes $3 million and expand beds to 300.

Monroe Voter Registration Deadline Ahead of Sept 13 Primary

City Clerk Freda M Bray urges Monroe residents to register by 5 p m tomorrow at City Hall to vote in the September 13 primary. To register a person must be 21, have one year in Wisconsin, and 10 days residency in the city. Bray notes many locals have not registered despite new resident influx.

State Mechanical Corn Picking Contest Plans Slated

The Green County Agriculture Chest approved a 40 acre field north of Idle Hour Mansion for the 1966 State Mechanical Corn Picking Contest on September 24. A western exhibit area on Lillian Stauffacher farm was also approved with 30 teams of 12 volunteers sought for operations.

Baby boom squeezes marriage patterns nationwide

Miami Beach report says the postwar baby boom creates a marriage squeeze with up to half a million young women delaying or forgoing first marriages. Census officials Paul C. Glick and Robert Parke Jr. say the gap arises as women age 18 to 22 while men remain 20 to 24, risking many not marrying. solutions include earlier marriages.

Sign Vandalism Reported At City Intersection

Monroe Street Commission er Jack Erb reported ongoing stop sign vandalism at 17th Street and 7th Avenue. The sign, installed with a heavy concrete base, was torn out twice and dragged to a field. The police are investigating. The board approved a new heavier base and a city vehicle for the engineer. The next meeting is Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. Cheese market in Madison shows cheddar steady with prices listed for blocks and daisies.
