Firemen juggle duties at 30th annual school in Green County

A record crowd attends the 30th annual School in Green County as more than 2,000 visitors and guests from quart of Wisconsin and Illinois fill motels and taverns. Fire Chief Josef Benkert escorts four from Potosi as rooms are scarce. The weekend features classes and public demonstrations led by Monroe firemen at the VFW Club dance and party.

The Monroe fire department displayed their new $29,000 truck during a school visit. A gas and oil firefighting demo in a pit showed chemicals outperforming water. A Chicago firm distributed X33 water repellent, later found highly inflammable and dangerous.

Juda Area School District Split Study Seeks Sept 15 Deadline

A special committee proposed by the Joint Agency 15 and 17 School Committee will study possible district changes in Juda. The plan would divide the Juda area between Monroe and Brodhead districts, bisecting Section 34 and attaching about 20 percent to Monroe and 80 percent to Brodhead. A Sept. 15 deadline was set for recommendations following an Aug. 18 Brodhead event.

Corn Picking Contest Entries Due September Fifteenth

Wisconsin officials remind entries for the Mechanical Corn Picking Contest are due Thursday September 15 in Juda. The deadline also covers display space applications with a committee meeting scheduled at the Agriculture Building. Green County hosts the event October 4 at Idle Hour Farm with a 40 acre field and up to 30 contestants.

Reserve Callup Bill Revived in House Armed Services

The House Armed Services Committee approved 32 to 1 a bill to authorize calling up about 190000 Reserve and National Guard members if desired. The president has not requested this power and no indication exists of use. The measure would let the president order active duty for non drilling Reservists in the pool and grant temporary authority through July 1, 1968 to activate drilling unit Reservists awaiting training.

Auto blaze at Palmer Albright Trailer Court

Firefighters responded to a trailer court south of Monroe on Highway 69 just after 7 30 this morning. Assistant Chief Paul T Mueller said a car owned by James Uptegran rolled back from a parked position near a trailer, struck another trailer and started a fire. The car was destroyed and the trailer sustained exterior damage.

Weekend mishaps stretch into Monroe and Brodhead roads

A Shetland pony owned by James Flanagan of Monroe was euthanized after being struck by a westbound car on Highway 81 two miles west of Monroe. The driver Minnie Rothelbuehier of Monroe reported damage to the right front headlight. Earlier, Bruce C. Allen of Marengo crashed on County Trunk 6 five miles southwest of Brodhead, damaging his car and striking a telephone pole. he reported no injuries. Another incident near Turn to No 4 involved Robert P. Sonderegger of Monroe, with damage to the undercarriage and right rear of his vehicle.

Two motorists died in a two car collision on County Trunk C three and a half miles east of Monticello at 8 35 p m Saturday Deputy Coroner T J Burgy said Marvin Marty 30 Route 1 Monticello and Ralph Voegels 37 Route 1 Albany died instantly from neck fractures Marty was en route to Blanchardville to visit his fianc e Linda Willborn Voegels born June 6 1929 in Adams Township Green County and living on the George Lange farm near Albany left a large family including wife three sons and three daughters He and his wife Inez Nyberg Voegels had farmed Monticello Albany areas A funeral for Voegels set at 2 pm Wednesday at Zwingli United Church of Christ Monticello with burial at Highland Cemetery Friends may call at Voegels Funeral Home Marty a Monticello High School graduate who served in the Army and worked in Monroe the past five years is survived by his parents and brothers and sisters Funeral services for Voegels and Marty are noted in the report with their burial and visitation details.
