Pace of War Slows Down Alfred and Emma Meier Trip

Alfred Shorty and Emma Meier of Monroe, across Highway 59 from Monroe Airport, plan a Sept. 4 departure for their sixth Switzerland visit as part of the New Glarus Yodelers tour. Born in Bunzen Canton Aargau and Argyle, they have bred Brown Swiss cattle and run a farming operation with custom butchery. The trip includes a week of bus tours and a return Swissair flight Oct. 24, with a wedding anniversary celebration for Emma's relatives in October.

Fire Destroys Schutte Barn in Monroe

A small barn at the George Schutte residence on Route 3 Monroe burned yesterday in an undetermined origin fire. Firefighters arrived at 3:59 p.m. and battled the blaze about 90 minutes, spreading bales of straw on the east end. Water was drawn from city hydrants as wind favored the home, with about three quarters of the structure and roof lost.

Animals euthanized after Camille strike along Gulf coast

Miss Emily Gloeckler of the Florida Association of Humane Societies says Hurricane Camille left thousands of dogs and cats homeless and injured across Louisiana Mississippi and Florida. Navy Seabees and Army National Guardsmen are humanely destroying severely injured animals due to lack of space and food. Donations support care for unscarred areas and the rebuilding of the Gulfport Animal Shelter as food for humans is prioritized. Representatives from national humane groups are assisting in Gulfport rubble searches for injured animals and owners.

Dogs join search for marijuana shipments in Vietnam

Cookie and Smidgen, a male female German shepherd pair, trained on Okinawa, patrol Vietnam for marijuana. They pass 16 weeks of training and are used to sniff out marijuana in baggage and pockets. The dogs are not perfect and may be expanded if successful.

It Gets Real Cold Up There Climbing Mt Fuji

Brad Kittelsen, 12, recounts a three week Japan trip with his Air Force family, climbing Mt Fuji in five hours with his brother James E. Jeff. He describes icy lava, 35 to 40 degree winds, and sunrise services at the crater. They flew from O’Hare to Tokyo via Anchorage and Seattle, visiting temples, gardens, and a Japanese hotel. Brad bought a tape recorder, kimonos, and tennis gear, took 210 color photos, and returned to Monroe for school after a lake vacation.

Jaycees Plan Event Saturday and Fall Meeting

Monroe Jaycees and their wives will host a corn boil at the Robert Heitz farm on Highway 59 near the Monroe Airport on Saturday evening August 30 with corn bratwurst and refreshments. Lenwood Potts is named a Jaycees director replacing Floyd Weeks. The first general fall meeting is set for Wednesday September 3 at 7 00 PM in the VFW Clubrooms. Forty three Jaycees attended the August 19 Windy Acres golf outing. Bob Collins won a prize of golf clubs and Paul Schoenicke had low gross with other prizes for Dick Schwartz Bill Honguinet and Lenwood Potts.
