Arab nations seek a summit of Islamic states and a joint Arab defense council in November to capitalize on Moslem anger over the Al Aksah Mosque fire in Jerusalem. The U N Security Council condemns Israel again while Israel says 14 Arab missiles target central Jerusalem.
Rep. William A. Steiger of Wisconsin says America wastes 50 billion dollars in idle public school buildings each summer. He backs voluntary year round sessions and community use to cut new construction, better utilize classrooms, boost education quality, and attract teachers. Speech delivered for Oshkosh Area Public Schools in Wisconsin.
Gov. Warren P. Knowles signed a $1.56 billion two-year state budget and ordered a special session to address issues omitted from the proposal. The plan includes 27 vetoes, a sales tax rise to four percent, broader tax coverage, cigarette tax up to 14 cents, and quicker collection of the mutual insurance premium tax. He balanced personal integrity with extensive veto use to counter legislative aims.
Lack of rain hurts corn and pastures across Green County with Albany and Adams York and Jordan Township hit hard. Corn is three weeks behind normal and silage may salvage only fodder. Hay yields vary. oats plagued by leaf rust. hogs face high prices but losses from TGE. Farm scene shows ongoing drought impact and cleanup needed.

The Monroe School Board approved an increase in high school student fees and authorized three new teachers Donna Schluesche Linda Kaye Heikes and Mark Larson completing this year’s teaching staff. They announced bids on fuel and milk contracts and reported maintenance work on Lincoln and Junior High roofs and parking lots with Northside playground blacktopping planned.
About 30 boars sold at the East Troy Swine Testing Station sale held at Green County Fairgrounds. The top price was 425 dollars. Boars came from 12 breeders with strong buyer turnout. Sale sponsored by Green County Swine Association and University extension. All boars carried Swine Testing Station records on feed efficiency and other carcass traits. Information came from two litter mates of each boar.
The Monroe Co op Cheese Factory in the former Borden building on 17th Ave will close September 1. Cheesemaker Karl Mueller, longtime employee for 22 years, cites dwindling milk supply as farmers switch to Grade A and haulers. He will stop cheese production after 36 years in the area, with plans to take it easy.
At the Monroe Fire House last night officers were elected and reelected including Frederick F. Lanz as first assistant chief Donald Van Wagenen as ladder company captain Tom Casey as ladder company lieutenant and George Engels as hose company captain Herman Spani was chosen as hose lieutenant replacing Emil Klarer Klarer also serves as city fire inspector George Cromwell was reelected to the grievance committee Hugh C Durgin was reinstated as a full time member and the department will again host the Fall Fire School of the Northern Wisconsin Northern Illinois Firemen's Association. Cleanup at the Fairgrounds continues with more work planned for Thursday as the house built for demonstrations nears completion.
Badger Red Cross Bloodmobile will be at Turner Hall Monroe on Wednesday September 10 from 1 to 6 30 p m. Nurses and licensed practical nurses are needed plus volunteers as typists escorts and labelers. Minimum 15 nurses and 20 volunteers required for each shift. Call coordinators for recruitment and donor appointments.
A spar arm on a 60 000 volt utility pole broke in a wooded area west of Monticello causing outages in Monticello and New Glarus with wide area flickers. Wisconsin Power and Light Co. says the break between the North Monroe Substation and Monticello was found by Madison switching and pinpointed by patrols. All customers restored after about twelve minutes. Monroe reports intermittent flickers during the event.
