Car Drowns in Sugar River near Brodhead

A submerged car near the Sugar River headgates at Brodhead led to the death of Duane R. Arnsmeier, 18, whose companion Michael Flynn, 15, escaped by opening a window and reaching safety. Deputy coroner ruled accidental drowning and noted the vehicle was off a city dump path, not a highway. Nine others injured in area crashes over the weekend were reported by the Green County Sheriff.

Monroe Schools set bus routes and lunches begin September

William Stuckey announces completion of all Monroe School transportation routes and that the school lunch program starts Friday September 1 at Monroe Senior High Junior High and Lincoln with about 950 rural students transported. Aug 31 misses kindergarten. trial bus runs Aug 29. milk program starts Sept 5 at two cents per half pint.

Juda to Build Nine Angels Memorial Park in Juda

Plans to create a 15 acre memorial park near Juda's northwest edge honor nine senior girls who died in a New Orleans motel fire. Project by Green County Soil Conservation District under Dave Woods includes enlarged pond for fire protection and rec activities, with a baseball field and playgrounds. Donations welcomed at Bank of Juda. tentative cost for pond about $10,000 to $11,000.

Man Gored by Bull Is Hospitalized After Farm Incident

Ivan Legler a 47 year old Brooklyn man was gored by a bull at the Legler farm between Brooklyn and Belleville. He sustained a fractured arm an injured shoulder and possible internal injuries. His son Donald used a pitchfork to keep the bull away until help arrived. Sheriff Roy Vetterli said the ambulance squad transported him to Stoughton after a 6 am call.

Mrs Sutter Leaves for Year in India for Study

Mrs. Sutter formerly Barbara Kundert of Monroe departs Saturday with 25 U S students for the College Year in India program. She will study at Banaras Hindu University while three groups attend three Indian universities under director Dr W Mopert Holmes in Delhi. Students live with Indian hosts and study language with local peers during the year.

Blood Donors Short of Area Quota at Monticello

Red Cross Bloodmobile visited Monticello on Friday August 25 and collected 28 pints toward a 50 pint quota. Merlyn Casey became a gallon donor. The blood drive operated at Fellowship Hall Zwingli United Church of Christ under Harold Schulz with a list of volunteers assisting and a canteen team led by Mrs. William Wendt and others. A second item notes Athens Civil Defense’s fallout shelter drill with nearly 1,000 volunteers confined for 24 hours, deemed the largest and most successful test.

Sunshine Aids School Flames Fire School At Green County Fairgrounds

Firefighting drills drew hundreds of spectators as the 31st Annual Fall Fire School ended at the Green County Fairgrounds. Monroe firefighters led by Chief Josef Benkert hosted the event with public demonstrations, aided by Standard Oil, Monroe Ready Mix, the Green County Sheriff’s Department, and others. Mayor Walter Ekum welcomed guests, with remarks from President F C Richter and Rev Robert Olsen.

Fire department demo showcases equipment at Mon- Toe event

The Assembly of God Church hosted a morning program with classes and an afternoon public demonstration. Displays highlighted firefighting techniques for tire, Christmas tree, gas, and vehicle fires, followed by a parade of equipment.

Schuldt Dies at 69 in South Wayne Hospital

Lester J. Schuldt of South Wayne died at 6 45 a m Monday August 28 in St Clare Hospital. He was admitted August 16. Hanson Funeral Home of South Wayne is handling arrangements.
