Australian AFS student Sue Bird arrives in Monroe

Sue Bird 17 of Lance Creek Australia joins Monroe High School as an AFS exchange student. She travelled July 17 from Sydney via San Francisco after a 1342 hour flight, spent two days in San Francisco for Stanford orientation, then rode to Milwaukee and Madison to meet her host family the Ablemans. She plans to study music French math social studies and English while here and aims to become a needlework teacher. She notes pancakes and donuts for breakfast as a new American habit and looks forward to winter. The local AFS group will welcome her at a get-together at Twining Park North Shelter House.

Olson charged in deaths of two Monroe teens

Harry E. Olson, 48, appeared before Judge Franz W. Brand and was arraigned on a homicide by intoxicated driver charge. The crash June 16 at Haddinger and Richland roads in Clarno killed Cheryl A. Dalen and Debra K. Golackson, injured Kenneth J. Rufener and Dennis L. Timm. Olson, driving the other vehicle, allegedly ran a stop sign. blood test showed high blood alcohol content. A Sept. 23 preliminary hearing was set. Olson posted a $2,500 signature bond.

Rifleman holds eight hostage on Cleveland Terminal Tower

A gunman on the 36th floor of Terminal Tower holds eight people in the Chessie Building near Public Square. Police report possible gunfire but cannot confirm. A hostage contacts a news editor, claiming instruction to reach media outlets. Entrances and access to the Square are blocked.

Cheese Days Drum Corps Meet Sets Prices at Gate
