Eau Claire County District Attorney Edmund Ay Nix said he advised NFO president Staley that he will not tolerate continued open defiance of Wisconsin law by NFO pickets blocking livestock markets.
A Racine County incident tied to the National Farmers Organization withholding drive prompted Sheriff W E Deininger to record the first formal complaint. Leonard French reported sugar dumped into a truck tractor’s fuel tank near Monroe, while NFO picket lines and demonstrations continued in Green County and Pecatonica and Monroe markets.
United States treasurer Kathryn O Hay Granahan underwent surgery to ensure proper knitting of bones after an elbow fracture and knee injury from a fall last week.
DES MOINES Iowa Secretary Freeman and two governors urged an end to violence surrounding the National Farmers Organization livestock market boycott. Governor Gubbrud of South Dakota warned of drastic action if violence continues while Governor Rolvaag of Minnesota said a callout of the National Guard was considered. Reports describe harassment of livestock truckers and damaged tires linked to market shipments across at least six Midwest states with some arrests reported. The NFO denied involvement and condemned violence.
The planning committee for New Glarus marks the village’s 120th founding with a two day schedule on July 30 and 31 1965. Events include registration hall of history exhibits Swiss music yodeling Heidi premiere local cast parade Swiss entertainment and a Sunday Volkfest at Wilhelm Tell Park by the Maennerchor.
Hurricane Cleo turned northward and hit southeast Florida with gale warnings from Sombrero Light to Fort Lauderdale. Forecasters warned winds to reach gale force this afternoon and tonight, urging small craft to seek safe harbors while warnings extended across Miami and the Bahama region.
At the Green County Shrine Club August meeting at Monroe Country Club plans were made for a Sept. 12 ceremonial in Monroe. The gathering also featured golf event prizes and notes on which petitions remain for the ceremonial and regular events.
A head on collision on Washington County Trunk Q near Menomonee Falls killed four people including three 17 year olds Eugene Schmidt Thomas Erdman and Dennis Mass all from Menomonee Falls and James Mueller 17 of the same town along with Mrs Carl Joop 38 of Germantown. The toll from Wisconsin crashes on Tuesday night plus other incidents raised the 1964 highway death toll to 694.
Atlantic City reports show Democrats moving past internal battles to acclaim President Johnson as their nominee and discuss his likely running mate. Senator Hubert Humphrey emerged as Johnson’s favored vice presidential choice, with Sen. Eugene McCarthy backing Humphrey and urging Johnson to consider him. The convention held a party platform and seating disputes, including Mississippi delegation issues, while Alabama delegates asserted loyalty.
Atlantic City reports two Goldwaters at the Democratic convention. Bert M. Goldwater, a Nevada delegate, dismisses jokes about his surname while Monroe Goldwater, aged 78, from New York, attends without claiming ties to Barry Goldwater.
At Atlantic City the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party demonstrated as Mississippi regulars balked at loyalty pledges and stayed engaged with the convention while many Mississippi delegates withdrew. The letter to Mischicot Junior Chamber of Commerce spurred the drive to legalize bingo amid Wisconsin’s gambling ban. Bronson La Follette urged study of consumer fraud and needed legislation at a Manitowoc meeting.
Sam Houston Johnson, President Johnson's brother, is in a Myrtle Beach hospital suffering from pneumonia and a kidney infection. Dr. R L Jackson said he is responding to treatment and should be discharged in a few days. He was vacationing when illness began about ten days ago.
Walter Babula the high school principal announced the new football field lights will be turned on at 8 30 this evening for parents and interested citizens. He urged visitors to also view the new bleachers and the field south of the high school.
Wisconsin delegates to the Democratic National Convention moved toward supporting part of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party credentials. They backed a plan for a roll call to secure votes for at least a portion of the Freedom group, amid pressure over the Mississippi issue and Hubert Humphrey as Johnson’s running mate. Governor Reynolds praised Georgia's Rep. Weltner as a human rights leader during the convention session.
Wilbur Renk candidate for U.S. senator made a brief, busy Monroe tour this morning. He attended a Marco's breakfast with GOP figures and local leaders, greeted workers at plants, and shook hands with hundreds in the downtown district. Herman Schmitz arranged the event, attended by more than 45.
