Polio Fatal Toll Rises Across Wisconsin Counties
Polio killed eight more people in Wisconsin over Monday and today. Milwaukee reported five new deaths bringing city totals to 15 resident and 15 non resident fatalities. Green Bay recorded a seven year old death after a first inoculation and Salk vaccine. The state tally lists Milwaukee with 249 cases, Outagamie with 202, and Dane County with 81. Fairs in Door and Scandinavia were canceled due to polio fears.

Stock Prices Rise On Broad Market Pickup
In active trading this afternoon the stock market advanced with railroads leading gains for Santa Fe New York Central Baltimore and Ohio Chesapeake and Ohio and Southern Pacific. Allied Chemical Union Carbide and American Cyanamid rose about two points while American Telephone fell. Anaconda gained up to three points on copper news from Chile with other gainers including U S Steel General Motors Goodyear Montgomery Ward Consolidated Edison Kennecott Standard Oil New Jersey and Johns Manville. Losses came from U S Rubber International Harvester Boeing Radio Corp Zenith Commonwealth Edison International Nickel American Tobacco and Loews.

Thompson Death Inquest Scheduled
A coroner's jury of six county residents was named to hear testimony in the May 19 automobile death of James Kenneth Thompson, 19, on County Trunk C in Brooklyn Township. The inquest, called by County Coroner Herman A. Stuessy and jurors selected by Sheriff Samuel F. Humbel, will be held at 10 a.m. in the Courthouse. Witnesses will include James Thompson and others. Kenneth Troxell is named as the driver of the car. A separate inquest into Sgt. Edwin W. Vincent’s death has not yet been dated.

Fire at Jos Huber Brewery Causes Major Damage
A small fire in the mill room of the Jos Huber Brewery caused $3,000 to $5,000 in damages and temporary brewing stoppage. The blaze, started by a short circuit, was contained by sprinklers and extinguished quickly, with brewing to resume within 24 to 36 hours. Four thousand pounds of malt were water damaged and discarded.

Flying Boxcar Crashes in Charleston Killing Nine
A C-119 Flying Boxcar crashed near Charleston Air Force Base in a Negro residential area. Nine or more killed including airmen and civilians. five of 11 crew members died. Washington reports July living costs rose for the second straight month with food and services driving a three tenth of one percent CPI increase. The index reached 114.7 percent of the 1947-49 average, the largest rise since May 1954.

Mrs. Tschudy Named To County Nurse Post
Mrs. Emil Tschudy of Monroe will serve as part-time county nurse to replace Miss Ruth Chase until a full-time nurse is found. She resumes duties Sept. 1 after Miss Chase resigned Aug. 15 for a Europe trip. The appointment was approved by the county health committee. Tschudy, formerly Martha Grether, previously county nurse here 1938 to 1945 and later worked in public health in western Wisconsin with Madison as headquarters before returning to Monroe.
