Pentagon announces $1.5 billion in cuts shrinking forces and fleet

Defense Secretary Melvin R. Laird unveils a $1.5 billion reduction including a 100,000 soldier cut and the inactivation of more than 100 ships such as the battleship New Jersey. The Navy, Air Force, and Army will trim capabilities and training, with a warning of weakened worldwide posture.

Hearings on Milwaukee Chicago milk order split held

USDA began hearings in Chicago on separating Milwaukee from the Chicago milk marketing order covering northern Illinois and Wisconsin. Dairy groups urged or opposed the split, citing market disruption and past losses from consolidation. Additional testimony is scheduled for August 25 in Oshkosh and a recommendation will follow.

Pass Christian Hard Hit by Camille Winds and Evacuation

In Pass Christian Mississippi Hurricane Camille devastated the town. Gov. Williams ordered evacuation due to possible epidemic while Seabee units led cleanup. The business district, bank, bakery and City Hall suffered major damage. Market gains in New York followed by cautious trading.

Miss Green County Farm Bureau Contest Seeks Applicants

Farm Bureau Women offer a $200 scholarship for University of Wisconsin Farm Short Course. Entries to Mrs. Gus Adamson Route 1 Monticello. Contestants must be Farm Bureau members or from a Farm Bureau family, single, 18 to 30, with farm background. Winner gets $25 bond, represents Green County Farm Bureau, competes in State Contest Nov 15–16 at Lake Delton, and may win an expense paid trip to the AFBF meeting in Washington DC starting Dec 9, 1969. Winners announced Oct 7 at Green County Farm Bureau Annual Meeting.

Fire Marshals Launch Probe Into Triple Early Morning Fires

Mineral Point authorities with Iowa and Lafayette counties summoned a state fire marshal to investigate three fires within an hour. At 3:05 a.m. Seven Oaks School in Lafayette County suffered extensive damage. A barn on the Robert Marr farm in Iowa County burned at 3:38 a.m. Then a house and car erupted in flames at Mineral Point’s west city limits before dawn.

Special Education Classes To Resume In Monroe

The Green County Special Education School at the former county normal building will start Tuesday August 26 with teachers reporting August 25 for in service. Principal Mabel Haskee oversees junior high. elementary taught by Mable Probst. Albany’s Elsabeth Rust handles primary. Helen Ginner trains. Enrollment projected at 35. Orville Bear is custodian and Morgan Johnson cooks. Bus drivers include Wedesky Von Moos Hanson Tollackson and others. Rudy Haskee formerly Green County superintendent heads handicapped program and serves as teacher counselor in Lafayette County.

Vietnam war casualties surge as week tallies rise

AP reports last week 244 Americans killed and 1,409 wounded in Vietnam, plus 477 South Vietnamese deaths and 1,269 wounded. Allied forces counted 3,798 enemy killed as fighting resumes after a lull. In Beloit, John Vance, 32, held on first degree murder charges with bond set at 11,000. In Washington, Rogers criticizes the Soviet Union for not aiding Vietnam mediation. In Pass Christian, Mississippi, recovery workers find over 200 bodies after Hurricane Camille. Gov Williams visits the scene.

Lions Visit Camp for the Blind in Wisconsin

Monroe Lions Club members and spouses will visit the Camp for the Blind at Rosholt Wisconsin on Sunday August 24. The event supports a Wisconsin Lions Club project and attendees should contact Floyd Achterberg or Dr. Robert Smith to arrange travel.

Flood toll climbs in Virginia West Virginia toll rises

Western Virginia towns along the Blue Ridge report 38 dead and 32 missing after floods from remnants of Camille. The James River rising above flood stage threatens Richmond and other cities as towns scramble with sandbags and damage exceeds 11 million dollars.
