Back To School Sections Highlight Monroe Advertisers

The Monroe Evening Times runs two special Back to School sections with 22 extra color pages and a safety feature as classes resume. Forty sponsors back the message featuring school calendars, faculty lists, Monroe School District story, and shopping for clothing and supplies with pre school bargains. The edition follows a seven month Wisconsin Legislature budget dispute and expects the governor to sign a bill lifting the selective sales tax to four percent, widening revenue beyond prior proposals.

Street Work Bids Opened for Main Street Improvements

Two bids for four blocks of Main Street improvements were opened at the Darlington City Council meeting and will be held until the Aug. 26 session. Williams Construction Co. bid 42 896 75 with work slated Sep 16 to Oct 31. Glendenning Limestone and Ready-Mix Co. bid 44 011 35 for April 10 to June 30 1970. Officials may ask Williams to hold their bid if work is postponed to spring.

Monroe Fire School Set to Open at Green County Fairgrounds

Monroe Firemen prepare for the 33rd Fall Fire School of the Southern Wisconsin and Northern Illinois Firemen's Association on Sunday August 24 at the Green County Fairgrounds. Registration starts 8 a.m. with classes for 2,000 to 3,000 visiting firefighters and demonstrations begin at 1 p.m. The event features a two story practice house and multiple exhibits while public admission is free for women and children with a $1 men’s registration to cover costs.

Visitors from Switzerland Tour New Glarus Misses Home Hills

Ursula Christen and Rosmarie Ruckstuhl of Switzerland visit New Glarus with the Karl Hofmanns at the Wilhelm Tell while touring southern Wisconsin. They miss the Swiss mountains and family in Thun and Zurich and plan to return by Oct. 16 for a 70th birthday. Freeway Plan Advancing Across Janesville Beloit Elkhorn

State Division of Highways backs a dual freeway system from Janesville Beloit to Elkhorn. The plan splits along US 51 and Highways 11 15 with an estimated 44 million dollar cost to Elkhorn and 11 million for the Beloit junction.
