A 15 minute gun battle at a west side rooming house left Detroit Patrolman George Krueger 29 and Ellis Bailey 33 dead. Robert Bovee a 20 year old Bassett farmer used quick thinking to save six head of Brown Swiss cattle when his truck caught fire en route to the Wisconsin State Fair. He steered the truck into a ditch on Highway 100 and built a straw ramp to guide the cattle to safety before a truck from the fairgrounds arrived to transport them to the dairy show.

Ten thousand residents of Putnam Connecticut faced a night of terror as hundreds of barrels of exploding magnesium drifted on flood waters through the business district.
