President Nixon ordered the Office of Economic Opportunity to pursue a "social pioneering" program to improve life for all Americans, urging risk-taking for progress and comparing social reform to space exploration.
The Monroe City Council in a special session authorized buying about 180 acres of land for the municipal airport. The $40,000 purchase from Ralph Shaffer and Lloyd L Leuenberger aims to support runway extensions and possible future dumping facilities. The land cost $210 per acre as paving and lighting of the primary runway proceeds with local, state and federal funding.
William M. Kubly of Monroe earned one of two $750 PepsiCo scholarships for employees' children attending the American Management Association's Operation Enterprise program. The UW senior, dean's list student and wrestler, will join the August Lake Moraine session in New York to study modern management principles and business administration.
Apollo 11 trio Neil Armstrong Edwin Aldrin and Michael Collins leave quarantine and return to their families as doctors report no lunar germs. A press conference in Houston follows with a Houston luncheon windup then ticker tape parades in New York and Chicago and a Los Angeles gala with President Nixon.
The Swiss Colony invites Green County residents to a Sunday open house August 17 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the main facility on 7th Avenue west of Monroe. Ray Kubly Jr. announces tours of the facility, data center hub, and bakery in The Monroe Evening Times.
A 10 year old girl lost overnight in Apple River Canyon Park near Warren Illinois was found at 6 15 a m by farmer Glenn Schaible about a quarter mile from the campsite. The girl Sue Feldman of Aurora had wandered after lagging behind her brothers Paul 13 and Glenn 12 during a return to the camp.
The Green County Bloodmobile schedule runs Aug 12 Albany School 3 to 6 pm with a 50 unit goal chaired by Mrs. John King. Aug 15 Monticello Zwingli Church 1 30 to 4 30 pm chaired by Harold Schulz and Mrs. Ted Zurbuchen with 50 units. Aug 26 Juto Zion United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall 2 30 to 5 30 pm 50 units. 18 to 21 year olds may donate without parental consent. Donations allowed up to age 66. Dr John Irvin coordinates medical coverage.
Mrs. William G. Wendt 64 of Monticello died at St. Clare Hospital at 9 55 a m Monday August 11 from an apparent heart attack. She formerly was Clara Wittenwyler and wed John C. Elmer in 1924 who died in 1953. She later married William G. Wendt. he survives. Frederick S Voegels Monticello led arrangements.
Three local 4-H girls Jody Wegmuller Macy Wyss and Karen Witt proved guardianship at the State Fair by helping unload livestock at 11 p.m. after missing the 10:30 dormitory curfew. 4-H Agent Allen Reed coordinated with police and the dormitory supervisor to allow the remaining unloading to proceed, easing parental concerns.
Gov. Rhodes pledged federal disaster relief after a weekend tornado damaged Cincinnati suburbs injuring 264 and killing four, with areas including Hartwell Silverton Deer Park Amberley Village Arlington Heights and Madeira hit along a seven mile zigzag path.
Over the weekend Green County and Monroe reported nine accidents with four people treated and released from hospital. incidents include a Brodhead driver losing control on Route 1181 and rolling a car, a collision at 26th Avenue and 7th Street causing damage to two vehicles, and a parked vehicle being struck while being moved in Monroe.
Nancy Anderson daughter of Mr and Mrs Edmund Anderson of 2316 17th St attends the National Jazz Clinic on Millikin University campus Decatur Ill from August 10 through 15. Faculty includes John LaPorta Charlie Mariano Herb Pomeroy Lee Konitz with Clark Terry headlining the August 15 concert. Nancy a Monroe High School sophomore has led saxophone sections and performed in multiple bands and quartets. She previously earned Lions Club scholarship to Wisconsin Summer Music Clinic and attended Platteville Clinic.
