Several barns burn in Green Rock counties. firemen busy

Three barns burned in Green County and one in Rock County on Friday August 8 with extensive firefighting by Browntown Monroe and Brodhead crews. Portman and Sopher barns were attacked after explosions and electrical concerns. No animals died. one calf perished. milking moved to nearby sites as crews aided by farmers fought flames for hours.

Clarence J. Hoesly 74 Dies In New Glarus August Heart Attack

Clarence J. Hoesly of New Glarus died at 11 20 p m Friday August 8 in St Clare Hospital eight minutes after admission from a heart attack He was a former village board member farmed in New Glarus Township and held co op and Masonic affiliations He was born May 11 1895 in New Glarus Township married Amelia Schiesser June 2 1921 and is survived by his widow a son a daughter two siblings six grandchildren and other relatives Funeral services will be 130 p m Monday August 11 at the Swiss Church New Glarus with burial in the Swiss Church Cemetery Masonic rites at the funeral home a day earlier.

Century Farm recognition set for Luther Lemon farm

The Luther Lemon farm on Route 1 Monticello will be honored at the State Fair Century Farm and Home Recognition Day on Tuesday Aug 12. A plaque will be presented to Mr and Mrs Lemon though they cannot attend. The Lemon family has occupied the farm for about 100 years with roots tracing to 1869.

Nixon unveils New Federalism and family assistance plan

President Nixon proposes a federal income guarantee of 1600 dollars a year for a family of four with supplements until earnings reach 3920 dollars, plus reforms to replace aid to dependent children and boost welfare funding. Revenue sharing would start in 1971, while action may lag.

Fire School Slated Aug 24 at Green County Fairgrounds

The 33rd Annual Fall Fire School will be held August 24 at the Green County Fairgrounds Monroe with 9 am start for registration and class assignments. Ten two hour sessions cover Hose in Fire Service Ladders in Fire Service Rating Bureau and Your Fire Department Fire Prevention Limited Water Supply Rural Fires and more taught by named instructors from state and national fire bodies. Noon dinner is available and many restaurants are open in town. Also noted is a separate AP report on Senate action to approve limits on testing shipment and storage of chemical and biological warfare agents.
