Watkins Heads Censure Case Committee in Senate
Sen. Watkins of Utah was named chair of the special Senate panel to consider proposals to censure Sen. McCarthy for conduct unbecoming a senator. Sen. Edwin Johnson of Michigan was named vice chair as the six member panel, split evenly between Republicans and Democrats, met in a closed session with Vice President Nixon. The body may hold open hearings with limited coverage and will study the charges, possibly using two lawyers and stenographers. McCarthy said a secret Army report names 30 officers as having active roles in granting an honorable discharge to Major Irving Peress, with plans to call some witnesses under oath. Albania apologized to Yugoslavia for the shooting of a Yugoslav frontier guard.
