A six member panel tasked with shaping Wisconsin's nearly two billion dollar budget has met in secrecy. Sessions were held away from the Capitol, including at a savings and loan office, with details and progress often unknown to lawmakers such as Senate Minority Leader Fred Risser.
Republican Sen. James Swan and other conservatives criticized secret sessions by a conference committee on the Wisconsin budget. They argued the meetings aimed to bar public input while debates over grants and university funding proceeded. Democratic members defended the process as informal and not intended to trade concessions.
Indian protesters led by AIM leader Michael Tribble vow possible occupation of the Winter Dam again if talks with Northern States Power Co and state officials fail. The Lac Courte Oreilles band had agreed to end the demonstration, with a meeting tentatively set for Aug. 16-17. The dispute centers on land now covered by the Chippewa Flowage and a 50 year lease with NSP that expires Saturday.
Marvin Poepping and his 10 year old brother LeRoy escaped serious injury when their semi trailer left Wisconsin 17 north of Rhinelander and tipped into a ditch beside a crossing. The truck ran 217 feet along the ditch with its cab roof crushed as a train passed. Marvins emerged unhurt and LeRoy had minor cuts and bruises. About half the eggs were scrambled in the cargo.
The death of David Wein, 23, of Hartland, in an unusual accident on Wisconsin 74 near North Lake was reported. The Wednesday night crash involved his car striking a lone boxcar across the crossing, amid a Wisconsin traffic fatality toll reaching 581 for the year.
Wisconsin sees unusually cool weather with record low temperatures for August. Eagle River marked 36 degrees for the second straight day, Milwaukee hit 50 degrees breaking a 51 degree record set in 1889, and other towns ranged from 40 to 50 degrees as forecasts predict similar conditions through the weekend.
A Wisconsin Senate committee hears a bill to exempt vending machine food from the four percent sales tax. Senator Raymond C. Johnson calls it corrective. opponents say it would reduce state revenues by about 9.2 million in the current biennium.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports July wholesale prices mixed with farm and processed foods down three tenths of a percent while industrial materials and steel products rise, pushing the index to 114.6 from the 1967 base. Nixon signals openness to a wage price review board with caution.
Gov. Lucey unveiled a amendment to the Wisconsin University merger bill at a joint news conference with UW President John C. Weaver. The plan tightens administration and trims campus powers while seeking a smoother consolidation amid opposition from Weaver who warned of chaos and duplication. Unemployment claims in Wisconsin rose to 39,567 last week from 37,685.
Gallus Kuhne a Swiss vocational teacher from near Bern visits Monroe staying with Mr and Mrs Joe Rast and family for three weeks. He travels with a group of 250 teachers on a four unit tour finishing in New York then Zurich.
Astronaut Alfred M. Worden performed a deep space spacewalk 197,000 miles from Earth to retrieve film canisters from the Apollo 15 craft. He floated 18 minutes with James Irwin guiding life support, while David Scott filmed the event and the crew returned to Earth.
