Monroe council rezones west side and sewer project approved

The Monroe City Council rezoned most of the Modern Housing site from Business to R-2 with a boundary segment remaining Business, and awarded a $6,547.50 sewer contract to Lawrenz and Associates. The body also restricted new building in the Urban Renewal area, added stop signs at three intersections, approved a reserve fire truck, and addressed emergency terminations and other city business.

Lucey backs Weaver as top merger system head

Madison Wisconsin Governor Patrick J Lucey reaffirmed John C Weaver as his No 1 pick to lead a merged university system despite Weaver criticizing the merger plan. Weaver urged lawmakers to reject the bill saying it is poorly conceived and would cause duplication and higher costs. The bill, backed by Lucey, faces Senate action after approval by the Joint Finance Committee.

Indians End Dam Occupation at Winter Dam

Militant Ingans ended their three day seizure of the Winter dam after a favorable response from the governor and a promised meeting to discuss grievances. Lac Court Oreilles chairman Rich Baker said talks were set for August 16 or 17 with Gov. Lucey and representatives. More than 100 Lac Court Oreilles members and supporters seized the dam to reclaim land now under the Chippewa Flowage.

Wisconsin's 1971 road toll stood at 579, two fewer than last year. An elderly Eau Claire woman, Marie Liddell, 74, was struck and killed crossing U S 53 in Eau Claire. Viktoras Stuopus, 51, of Cicero Illinois, died when his car overturned on U S 12 about two miles south of Lake Geneva.

William Baird spoke to about 500 at the University of Wisconsin on contraception and abortion and was not arrested.
