In Bradenton Florida public schools begin desegregation with 2 600 students moved to new schools to achieve an 80 20 black white ratio under a U S district court order. 107 teachers were transferred as Gov Claude Kirk was at the state Capitol during the start of busing.
The Defense Department reported a Soviet nuclear attack submarine likely with up to 88 crew members aboard may have been lost in the Atlantic about 400 miles northwest of the Spanish coast. American planes witnessed part of the incident before the sub vanished last weekend.
Soviet Deputy Foreign Minister Vladimir Semenov arrived in Vienna for the resumption of SALT negotiations with the United States. He said the Kremlin instructed his delegation to conduct talks factually and constructively and hoped the American side would do the same.

Monroe Lions Club seeks about 40 drivers to transport 240 seventh graders from Monroe School System on a Thursday trip to Madison April 16. Drivers, male or female, meet at Junior High at 7 30 a.m. with sack lunches, returning by 5 p.m. Students will visit the State Capitol and other sites, meeting state officials. 20 cars currently lined up.
Ninety seven sixth graders from Northside School and 28 fifth graders from East School, with teachers and many parents, traveled from Janesville by train to Chicago on Saturday. They visited the Museum of Science and Industry after riding the Inter Urban Transit train and exploring the loop and subway. Lunches were on a bus at noon before museum entry, then meals back in Janesville before returning to Monroe. The trip marked first train rides for many, with numerous adults listed as chaperones and transportation arrangers.

Juda High School student Thomas Sumwalt earned first division at the Stateline Music Festival in New Glarus for a vocal performance of Nina and will advance to the State Music Festival at Whitewater State University on April 25. Accompanist Karen Newman, also of Juda, helped the duo in a field featuring numerous district solo and ensemble entries across Class A and B divisions with multiple instrument solos and duets led by district directors Frank Daniels and Mrs Seton.
