Washington opened the 1958 cancer crusade to raise 30 million dollars. Dr John R Heller of the National Cancer Institute cited 700000 Americans in treatment and 800000 cured since onset. Willard A Bender, son of the late Willard C Bender, becomes a staff member at Commercial and Savings Bank effective today. He previously served as assistant cashier at Stoughton State Bank for ten months after a career as a Federal Deposit Insurance Corp examiner. Bender, UW Madison 1953 BA in business administration, served two years as Army lieutenant. His father died March 17 1957. Ohio driver gets jail in free children bus escape
Twenty five frightened children fled a moving school bus on Greasy Ridge road in Ironton Ohio after the vehicle slowed on hills. James V McConnell 55 of Chesapeake pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated and received six months in jail a $500 fine plus costs. An unidentified man McConnell picked up earlier drove the bus briefly before being released. The patrol found the bus empty and the children had escaped through emergency exits and windows with no injuries reported.

Monticello star Jim Zweifel earns AP 1958 All Wisconsin high school basketball first team for the second straight year. Joining him are Marty Charrity Shawano Jim Hughbanks Green Bay East Jim Kimble Milwaukee North and Bob Powers Madison East. Zweifel scored 937 points this season for a career 2265 and led State Line League with 53 points in a game. Charrity added 706 points this season and a 44 point game in the state tournament.
