New law ties Texas inheritance tax to federal rules
State Comptroller Bob Bullock announced a new inheritance tax law effective for estates dying on or after September 1 1981. It ends the old tax schedule and links Texas collections to a portion of federal estate taxes, potentially saving at least 20 million dollars in the first year. The change allows deduction of state taxes from federal amounts and auto adjusts if federal rates change, with 45 other states using similar piggyback rules. Estates prior to September 1 1981 stay under the old law. At Texas A&M University a fall course will study ancient civilizations in the Holy Land with students carrying Bibles as historical references, amid interest possibly sparked by Raiders of the Lost Ark.
