Thieves Break Into Safe in Post Office Robbery

Thieves pried open a rear door and looted the post office Tuesday night, taking $32.35 and about 15 registered letters. The combo knob on the outer safe was knocked off and a small unused compartment was opened. Matches near the safe suggested two or more burglars, who wore gloves as no fingerprints were found. Postmaster Earl Estes said most mail had been forwarded the day before, and stamps scattered on the floor indicated minor stamp loss. Investigators from Public Safety and local agencies followed leads, but late Wednesday no clues had been found. The office remained closed pending permission to reopen.
