The Oklahoma City ensemble led by Director Charles G. Walker captured the top prize in the National Band Contest amid high school competition. Walker is pictured with the group after their victory, signaling a standout performance by the students.
City Council in regular session Wednesday night passed an ordinance extending the limits of the fire zone sector in Monahans Texas. The extension includes all of block 20 and the south half of block 26 of the original town of Monahans. The fire zone ordinance requires that all structures erected in this area be of brick or tile materials. The council explained the passage of the ordinance noting the building and remodeling of frame structures would greatly increase fire hazards and affect health lives and property. The ordinance is in full effect from passage.
Residences of A. M. Woosley and Luke Snelson at Grandfalls were burned to the ground just before midnight on Saturday. Monahans volunteer firemen arrived in the 18 mile run aboard a new American LaFrance truck in near record time but could not save the structures. They did extinguish the flames and prevented further damage. Earlier, Thursday night the Worth Hotel fire was contained after smoke poured from windows and a closet under the stairway. Very little damage resulted.
First State Bank deposits reached about $205,000 late last week, estimates cashier J. C. Wright. The bank has operated nearly three months and handles 600 to 875 checks on out of town items daily, with significant business from Wink and Kermit.
Mrs. Rosie Clark recalls opening the Lone Star Hotel six years ago and notes a shift to a modern building era. The original hotel was moved behind the Ballard Hotel to make space for new construction on Main Street. A new fifteen room hotel is rising on Guadalupe Street with all rooms already booked, despite completion in two weeks.
Midland and Monahans face off as Trammell's Trojans meet the Cards in a three game set with a doubleheader on Sunday. Cards lead the West Texas New Mexico pack and have not dropped a series. Lights near completion may allow night play by weekend.
Dallas businessman C P Lyman visited Monahans this week to promote the city's proposed hotel. He said most of the ground floor is leased to business concerns and expected plans to begin construction without delay. The revised design calls for a three story hotel with 76 rooms and 14 store rooms on the ground floor.
Ward County spring term district court adjourned after a terse session returning three indictments for forging a instrument, driving while intoxicated, and theft by bailee. No arrests were reported. Judge J A Crane presided over seven divorce cases granting plaintiffs annulment or divorce and several civil dispositions plus dismissals for lack of prosecution.
Mrs O L Taulman has as her guest this week Mrs J W Howard who plans to return to her home in Cleburne tomorrow.
Mr and Mrs Dale Sloan visited in El Paso Wednesday. They toured local sites and stayed briefly with friends before returning home.
The Chamber of Commerce regular meeting Tuesday discussed traffic enforcement sidewalks street improvements a city park playground post office relief a municipal swimming pool public library curfew law tree planting plans a social center and more. A proposal to close businesses earlier and switch to biweekly noon luncheons was also raised.
The Monahans High School band, 53 musicians under Charles G. Walker, earned the highest Class C Division 2 rating at the Sixth Southwest National Band Tournament in Oklahoma City. Wright, a cornet soloist, placed third in a cornet division. judges included university band chiefs A A Harding and Wm D Reville. The band traveled by bus from Monahans to Oklahoma City, returning Sunday.
The cornerstone laying for the Presbyterian Church under construction was marked by a Tuesday evening service with sixty participants. Rev J L Cleveland of Abilene presided, and Dr E B Surface of Abilene spoke on the church as a community trail blazer, noting Monahans' vision for the future. Supporting prayers were offered by Rev Ray B McGrew.
Odessa Oilers topple Monahans Trojans as league batting leaders with an .839 combined average through May 14. Reinhardt of Roswell leads with .510, while Nock, Pippen, Hoffman, Reist, and Smyley post top marks across runs, hits, and RBIs. Monahans’ Rose tops slugging with .600, and pitchers Scott and Davis lead undefeated with three wins each.
Harold Geld of El Paso opened the Hi Way Auto Supply on West Main Street this week. He will offer a complete line of auto supplies and accessories including U S tires and tubes. The owner operates with his brother in the business and also runs an El Paso auto supply store.
Six Monahans men and their wives hosted a steak fry for Brotherhood members and their spouses from Kermit Pecos Monahans and Wink. The event took place Monday night in the gravel pit on the Wink Kermit road.
Monahans High School will hold commencement for senior graduates on Monday evening May 31 in the school auditorium with Dr H W Morelock Sul Ross State Teachers College Alpine to deliver the commencement talk and Rev Ray B McGrew First Methodist Church to give the baccalaureate sermon Sunday at 1 oclock. Seventh grade graduates will also be honored Tuesday June 1 in the high school auditorium. The Junior High choral group will assist as the senior activities include a Prom in the gym tomorrow night and a junior class banquet Saturday May 29 at Masters Cafe private dining room. Graduates listed include Billie Bullock Marie Burton Ruth Coupland Mary Crawford Ruby Freeman Peggy Henderson Jeanette Russell Littie Lowe Cecil Driggers Pershing Griggs Jack Hardaway Faye Hogg Thurman Hunt Lloyd Lewis Jack Shanks Frank Stampfli. Honor students will be announced at the commencement service.
Bill Hale resigns from Monahans Motor Company after two years to join Carl Sewell Motor Company Odessa Ford dealers. He and his wife will move to Odessa once housing is secured.
