Stop Lights Installed Around Local Schools

Traffic signals were installed on Minor Pacific and Guadalupe streets near the High and Elementary schools. Signals operate before and after school and during noon hours, with drivers required to stop. Two switches control operation at the two schools. Red lights appear when active and drivers may proceed only after a complete stop.

Monahans Delays Clean-Up Week to Late April or May

Mayor Hill announced Monahans will postpone the annual Clean-Up Week to the last week in April or early May. The plan mirrors last year with one day for hauling trash from four residential sections and one day for the downtown area. The Chamber of Commerce Rotary Club and Boy Scouts will cooperate to ensure a thorough cleanup.

A public mass meeting was held at the High School called by local labor organizations to state labor's stand on municipal government and improvements and to give city candidates a chance to speak on the issue.

Protective Ass'n Gains Momentum in West Texas

A new Monahans chapter of the Protective Association forms with two directors George Young and Johnny Smith. Local leaders from Wink Kermit Pyote Wickett and Mentone join as members planning a April 15 barbecue with state officials Elliott Barker and Judge E B Elifers as guests. A Wickett chapter also organized this week and Odessa unit is planned next week.

Filing Closes in City Races for Four Seats

Twenty candidates seek six city executive and staff posts in filings at City Hall. The April 4 election will pit Mayor E R Hill against Dr. E J Cook and J O Donaldson, with Cook leading a Progressive Association slate including Harry L Wilson, Dick Bonine, and Ben Nedow. Donaldson runs unaffiliated. Other hopefuls include Conrad Dunagan and Jimmie Terrell. two council seats will be filled.

Deadline set for 1939 auto licenses next Friday

About 500 passenger car and 200 truck licenses had been issued by noon yesterday, deputy sheriff Ed Hocking said. With March 31 the license deadline, motorists are urged to obtain licenses promptly to avoid penalties.

Rhinehart Fined in City Court for Ticket Scheme

E R Rhinehart of Fort Worth was convicted in city court for absconding with funds from selling game tourney tickets billed as Royal Neighbors sponsored. He paid a $14 fine and returned money to local merchants and buyers. he disappeared after selling tickets and was later arrested in Midland. Local Royal Neighbors officers say all funds have been refunded to merchants and purchasers.

Water to reach Grandfalls irrigation ditches

Red Bluff officials report water from the Red Bluff system should reach Grandfalls city ditches last Saturday. WPA labor finished the ditches to supply irrigation for homes and few businesses and to water trees planted under the project. Farmers in the Candfills area will begin irrigating for the third year since completion, with about 3000 more acres added but total usage not rising much due to soil conservation efforts.

Masonic Building Plans Await Lodge Approval

Plans for the new Masonic Building were to be submitted to a lodge members for approval by the architects tomorrow night. The building committee said Grand Lodge approval is not yet obtained but there is little doubt the new plans will be submitted.

City Considers Five Acre Site For Pool and Park

Monahans council eyes a five acre tract on south Hoxie street for a municipal pool and adjacent park. The Seary estate heirs own the land and will meet next month to discuss the offer. The pool would measure 50 by 150 feet with drainage water used to irrigate the park.

Four Schools Enter West Texas Choral Meet at Monahans

Four schools will send choral units to Monahans for the West Texas Choral contests on April 1 under Charles G. Walker. This marks the first year of interscholastic league sponsorship with many schools unprepared. About 350 out of town students from Wink, Kermit and Odessa are entered in choral numbers along with glee clubs solos and ensembles. Monahans will field 40 to 50 students. Outdoor pageant finale plans remain undecided.

Harvest Time For Ward County AAA Farmers

Ward county receives 7378.10 dollars from the 1938 agricultural conservation program. County agents distribute checks in the Grandials and Barstow communities to farmers who complied by planting cotton seed and soil building crops as required under the AAA terms.

Monahans Becomes 12th Largest City in SW Texas

Texas Almanac figures rank Monahans as the twelfth largest in Southwest Texas with about 6,000 residents in 1839 and a gain of over 5,000 since the 1930 census. San Angelo leads the region with 30,000, while Odessa ranks seventh with 12,500, up from 4,07 in 1930.

Twelve candidates filed for Monahans Wickett Independent District trustee positions. two withdrew and L A Jones cannot be located, asking voters to scratch his name. April 15 Deadline Set for AAA Sign-Ups in Texas

The AAA announces April 15 as the last date for Texas farmers and ranchers to sign work sheets indicating intent to apply for 1939 Agricultural Conservation Program payments. The earlier deadline, approved by the State Agricultural Conservation Committee, targets operators who did not receive 1937 or 1938 payments and notes allotments are available earlier this year. Air Mail Service at Monahans Faces Possible Cut

Postmaster Earl Estes warns that the daily star route air mail from Monahans may be discontinued by July 1 if outgoing volume does not increase. The service, operating daily except Sunday, provides fast connections east and west and saves 12 to 24 hours on deliveries.
