Ward County Commissioners accepted a 373672.34 dollar insurance settlement for Ward Memorial Hospital after a state survey deemed damage minimal. County Judge Chester Taggart noted federal disaster aid likely unavailable and said the hospital building, insured for about 45 percent of value, faced rebuilding costs near 2.28 million dollars.
Army Reserve Civil Affairs Brigade trained West Texas Children’s Home staff and youths in disaster planning after Col Hassell and his team provided a two week program at Pyote. The effort included feedback from Home residents shaping the plan and training, with Reservists calling it highly rewarding and noting WTCH as a preferred Texas Youth Council site.
Texas DPS projected 51 traffic deaths from 6 p.m. Friday July 1 to midnight Monday July 4 with many crashes linked to speeding and drinking. Highway Patrolman Mike Moore urged defensive driving and courtesy to curb reckless behavior.
