Vacation season prompts advice on travelling with pets. Begin car training weeks ahead, desensitize to gasoline and engine sounds, then choose safe transport. If left, park in shade and vent, avoid tethering dogs, use a carrier, and plan dog sitting to ease both pets and owners.
The County Commission will consider calling a four million dollar bond election for a new hospital. They will also look at selecting an architect and review a building contract option with Hospital Affiliates International. Monday's meeting starts at 2 p.m. due to the Board of Equalization.
The Senior Citizen Center will host a Monday noon luncheon at 205 East 4th Street with a Summer Time theme. A brief Friday shower increased weekly moisture to .15 inches with small amounts on Tuesday through Friday. The yearly total reaches 5.62 inches, still below the regional average.
Chick-N-Reel, a chicken and seafood restaurant, will be located at 400 South Main. Construction starts in about three weeks, says Steve Frisbie, partner manager. It will offer a drive-up window and both dine in and carry-out options with fried chicken, shrimp and fish on the menu.
About 200 children take part in the Jungle Journey Summer Reading Club sponsored by the local library and Texas State Library. Reading logs, posters, and jungle animal bookmarks motivate participants at Ward Library. After 20 books, readers receive a Texas Reading Club certificate. The program includes story hours on turtles and tadpoles and a July crochet hand puppets class for ages 12 and up, with puppets featured in taped book stories.
