Tonight the Monahans Chamber of Commerce hosts its annual banquet with awards, an after dinner speech by humorist Dr Howard W Jarvis, and a vote on a major revision of the constitution and by laws._changes include director count up from nine to eighteen and an early president election. Tickets are ten dollars.
Houston Oilers wide receiver Kenny Burrough will speak at the Booster Club Football Awards Banquet at the Junior High Cafeteria Saturday at 7:30 PM. The event will award the Fighting Heart Most Improved and Monahans News Most Valuable Player trophies, with tickets priced at 6 dollars sold in advance by local outlets and booster members.
The 1980 census will count Ward County using the conventional method in late March. Questionnaires will be mailed to every household with pickup by census takers in three weeks after March 28. Janet Faulkner is named census district office manager in Pecos with about 290 temporary workers.
Ward County Commissioners reach a resolution after Area Builders owner R B Hampton accepts responsibility for changes in the Southwestern Bell contract tied to Ward Memorial Hospital. SWB claims rate hikes from the PUC affect the Dimension 100 system, while Hampton says his firm absorbs the increase. The commission amends the change order to Dimension 100 and approves related bids and actions.
James R. Bentley has authorized the Monahans News to announce his candidacy for Ward County Commissioner in Precinct Three. He moved to Grandfalls in 1938 and after high school married Vera Hare. He served three years in the Army Corps of Engineers during World War II and later earned a business degree from Hardin-Simmons University before returning to oilfield construction work.
The News corrects an error from last Sunday stating J. H. Bowden is a candidate in Precinct Three for County Commissioner. The correction clarifies Bowden’s candidacy remains in Precinct Three with no change of counties.
