Enlisted in Iowa Volunteers the soldier fell ill with typhoid fever and died. The report notes the illness began after service and reflects the era's military medical challenges.
Richard Saul, a Mitchell area native and private in Co G 52d Towns infantry, died in Fort Dodge Iowa from typhoid fever after a hospital transfer from Chickamauga. He was 22, educated, hardworking, and remembered for his character by family and neighbors. His funeral honors were held with G A R rites.
A large crowd gathered at Mr. and Mrs. R. R. Saul's home in Mitchell on Sunday to honor Private Richard H. Saul who sacrificed his life for his country. The service was led by Rev. B W Burleigh and Rev. A C Stevens with music by local performers. The preacher spoke on patriotism and duty as attendees viewed the casket surrounded by floral tributes from Fort Dodge and others.
The senator’s remarks drew little warmth as Pettigrew spoke, meeting a tepid reception from colleagues. The exchange reflected cautious dissent and muted approval within the chamber.

H. M. Clark of the German Insurance Co of Freeport Illinois settled a recent barn fire claim quickly. On August 28 he insured a barn on R. M. Spink’s farm near Ethan. three days later the barn burned. Two weeks after the fire he received a draft for 850 to cover the loss.
