The notice itemizes fabrics and accessories with bulk discounts. Many textiles such as lawns allowances at 9 cents per yard and 5 cent lawns offer substantial savings. Linens, gauze vests, umbrellas, ties, and sample dresses are marked at reduced prices, including half-price for select $5 and $3.50 items.
The W C U entertained a large audience with a musical program and war discussion. Finance committees begin fundraising for the regiment. Laurson of Mitchell named cadet to West Point. The public reception at the corn palace featured ice cream, cake, and multiple musical and vocal performances by L T L members, Misses Goodykoontz Stair Myrtle Lee Rosa Lee, Mrs. Stevens, and others. A. E. Hitchcock spoke on the Philippine question and Cuban war origins, praising Christian civilization advancing beyond commerce. The event concluded with praise for the W C T U ladies and their hospitality.
The Eastern Star anniversary observance recalled Robert Morris and the group’s growth as a Masonry auxiliary. Starlight Chapter members met at Masonic hall with Rev. J H Babcock opening. Florence Gregory and H P Beckwith sang, Dr Bracy spoke on Morris, and readings highlighted the founder’s literary skills.
O L Brunson, an 18a finance committee member, in charge of raising funds for the regiment's return home, received 28 circulars from Aberdeen Chairman Brown. Reports indicate Brookings has completed its amount, Hughes has met quota plus an extra $100, and Stanley County is $100 over.
Mr Branson oversees Davison Aurora Hanson and Jerauld counties to secure funds while urging rapid placement with State Treasurer Schamber. A one dollar souvenir button will be sold to raise money, with an initial $3,000 emergency hospital fund for ill soldiers arriving in San Francisco. Buttons ready by next Wednesday to support the effort.
Word arrived Saturday evening that Emil Laurson passed West Point physical and mental tests and received appointment as a cadet. The report notes Stuart likely failed either mental or physical exam, probably the latter, a result welcomed by Laurson’s friends in Mitchell.
The range stove peddlers, after repeated losses in lawsuits, left the area and headed for counties around Mitchell. They were licensed in Davison County but arrested in Kimball and Hanson counties for selling stoves outside license rules, facing multiple cases. The piece urges patronizing local dealers and home industries instead.
S F Goodykoontz called the union convention to order at the courthouse Saturday afternoon to select eight delegates for the union judicial convention. About 20 delegates attended, with John Colvin elected chairman and H B Hececk as secretary, a credentials committee named, and a five member names committee appointed. Delegates elected without instructions included A E Hitchcock, John Colgin, L I Whitcher, H J Mohr, George Mabbott, and others. the body adjourned after completing its business.
The Wessington Springs city council debates street lighting. A special committee recommends gasoline lamps for side streets to cut costs, with about 100 lamps and a $25 monthly estimate. An experimental phase will begin immediately pending further action. The Electric Light Co. plans to remove poles and wires from arc lights serving the residence district. Adjournment to a special meeting follows.
Word arrived that Hub Wallace of Wessington Springs died suddenly of heart failure Saturday morning at his home. He was a banker in Wessington Springs and had many friends in this city. His mother Mrs Levina Wallace, visiting here, was notified and left on the afternoon train to join him.
H. J. Wallace died Saturday morning at Wessington Springs. Funeral services were held at the local church Sunday and the remains were taken to Graceland cemetery in Mitchell for burial beside his father Major Wallace. Pallbearers included M. A. Schafer J. Sickler C. W. England G. N. Price P. Br. Hackett and R. Vanderveen. the funeral party was accompanied by Mrs. Levina Wallace and the children Dale Eula Bird and Adilene.
After the county union convention on Saturday the delegates elected to arrange the union state convention. Committees named include Finance with L.
