Mitchell, a regional trade center, shows strong growth this fall with new establishments and expanded facilities. J. Morrow built a large threshing goods depot, Turner & Son added a two story butter and egg warehouse, L. J. Shaw opened a furniture stock, Ferris plans a drug store, Harker Bros upgrades, Verilyea and Chicago Shoe Store expand, and Plotner enlarges the hotel. About forty tenants now own homes, signaling confidence and stable population for a prosperous year ahead.

Hanson Officers After Em Target Peddlers Arrested in County

The Brule county operation moved into Hanson county where two men were arrested after a warrantless appeal. Sheriff Murray pursued them into a farmer’s place and they were brought to town, charged with peddling without a license. They pleaded not guilty, were found guilty, fined 100 dollars, posted 200 dollars bonds, and appealed to the circuit court. They refuse a license and may face further action. Hanson county vows enforcement.

Big Income From Leases

A Pierre dispatch reports the state leased 925 210 acres of school and endowment lands by the end of the fiscal year, up 118 832 acres from 1398. The average lease price is 6 cents per acre, boosting revenue well above prior years, with receipts expected to exceed last year by more than $10,000 as remaining leases come in.

Why M'Coy Was Let Out

The real reason Charles D. McCoy was removed as post office inspector in South Dakota is that after failing to gain confirmation as Indian agent at Cheyenne River, he was kept from South Dakota but began inspecting local offices and boasting of defeating the party. The Republican organization aligned against him and secured his removal after tense internecine fighting.

State Board Resets Assessments Raising Valuation statewide

The state board of assessment and equalization adjourned with major increases in land values totaling over 16 million dollars and higher personal property and corporate assessments. Total valuation likely reaches 160 to 165 million dollars with a 2.2 mill levy for state and bonds and 32 mills on telegraph and rail lines. Railroad property up 2.64 million, about 28 percent. overall nonrail property up about 33 percent from last year. Top railroad per mile values include Illinois Central Sioux City and Northern at 6000, Omaha and Sioux Falls terminal at 5000, followed by Chicago Milwaukee and St Paul at 4750 and Chicago and Northwestern at 4344. The board will reconvene August 29 to hear complaints.
