Davison County Democrats reject fusion politics. A bold daylight robbery attempt at C Burnside’s store ends with a fleeing suspect. clerk John Reid chases but cannot recapture the thief. The safe was breached through the rear entrance, but no one was captured.
Bard Methodists near Mitchell dedicated a new church Sunday afternoon. Presiding Elder Hager gave the dedicatory sermon assisted by Rev. F. J. Norton of Alexandria. The service included hymns, scripture readings, choir selections, offerings, a baptism, and a benediction.
A letter to Dr. Geo P. Dix says Jimmie Devine enlisted last week and is at Fort Logan California with Company A of the Thirty fourth Regiment. He reports good progress but misses the beefsteak he used to have for breakfast and supper.
A boy named Jimmie arrived at St Paul August 11 with others bound for Fort Logan. He reports 1300 troops housed in tents plus 500 at target grounds. He expects to depart for San Francisco in mid September and then to the Philippines. He vows to serve honorably and asks friends to wish him luck.
John Hemn, a Sioux Reservation rancher, is bound over by Justice C. C. Morrow to stand trial in Bruid County circuit court on grand larceny for a steer with a different brand. The five day examination included many witnesses and focused on ownership and possession as the steer was shipped to Sioux City for sale. Hemn, a noted stockman, has reputable ties and his supporters seek to prove his innocence.
Davison County South Dakota Democrats meet August 19 1899 to reject the fusion state committee call as not representing the party and to refuse partisan involvement in the judiciary race. The central committee will continue its current structure for another year with J K Smith as chairman. The notice also advertises a special rail excursion from Iowa to Philadelphia for Sept 4 9 1899 with sight seeing at Gettysburg and details available from ticket agents and John Cook excursion manager.
Major Warne was arrested in Nagasaki after a dispatch from The Republican’s desk reported Frost secured the arrest. The letter Warne sent to Senator Pettigrew criticizing officers is published, describing regimental weariness, sick lists, and alleged suppression of returns home. The Sheridan touched Nagasaki last week. the fate of Warne and Frost remains linked to the pending court martial.
An army officer argues Major Warne of the South Dakota volunteers may not be court-martialed for a private letter criticizing Colonel Frost in a letter to Senator Pettigrew. He contends Warne served only in the Spanish American War and was not bound to Philippine service, challenging authority and discipline claims.
The Mitchell Coursing Club will host an enclosed meet on September 8 and 9 at Mitchell Driving Park Association grounds. Judge Jos Dodd of Farwell will oversee the event, rabbits imported from Kansas, 16 dogs compete, and top dogs travel to Waterloo cup in Texas next month. Entries come from Hornsby Egan McEwen Avery Nichole and others.
A unnamed city gentleman proposes a nonpartisan scheme to fund a $250 bounty for each South Dakota regiment volunteer, covering their return from California. He suggests funding via the next legislature, with taxes rising minimally for all taxpayers, to ease their transition home and provide work opportunities until employment is found.
