The Methodist Conference formally opened on Wednesday morning with Bishop Warren of Colorado presiding over the session as the gathering began.
A large Methodist church audience heard Dr. Manley Hard defend the Church Extension Society’s work across South Dakota and neighboring states. He outlined donation and loan programs, cited loans totaling $202,000 on the Pacific coast, and noted 10,482 churches aided. The Dakota conference then opened with Bishop Warren’s remarks on spiritual power, the Lord’s Supper, and a call to support church building funds.
Benjamin Morse and Sarah E. Banks marked fifty years of marriage at Sheffield and West Union before settling in Mitchell. The Baptist church hosted a celebratory event with friends, speeches, and gifts including a lamp from their grandson. The couple’s long, faithful union was praised by Rev. C. W. McConnell and local communities.
The Mitchell Printing Co invites readers to list the periodicals they plan to subscribe to for the coming year. They promise to forward orders to publishers, saving time and money with an estimate.
The W. J. Healey shooting tournament began Tuesday morning at the east end grounds. Five traps fire pigeons for two hours as shooters test skill from about 50 feet. Notable participants include J. W. Hutchinson and T. C. Aiken of Sioux Falls, G. L. Taylor of Algona, Dr. Noid of Canton, H. L. Taylor of Meckling, James Halla of Armour, and E. A. Leach of Tripp.
A telegram from Hull Iowa reported Frank Shepherd severely injured while breaking on the Milwaukee road, with initial claims of a leg loss later revised to minor injuries. He was at the Running Water branch when the accident occurred and his parents had opposed breaking on the railroad. Mrs Shepherd traveled to Hull to check on him.
