A Mitchell audience heard Superintendent Quigley advocate modern teaching methods and a shortened or abolished recess. He urged parent engagement and noted early in the report that Duncan Patrick died Friday in Sioux City after a long illness, with Patrick’s English roots and American career traced.
Duncan Patrick died Friday morning in Sioux City from consumption. He left Mitchell in mid August for Sioux City, saying he would return soon improved, but his illness progressed, ending his life.
Inspector Fosnes probes a Plankinton post office break in which the safe was blown, $125 in cash taken, about $200 in stamps left, and $100 in gold saved. Five registered letters stolen. four suspicious men seen earlier. The Scotland post office robbery nearby suggests an organized gang at work. authorities seek swift arrests.
County commissioners worked late to finish in one day approving two major contracts. A new Hubbard bridge seven miles north will be steel, awarded to R D Wheaton of Chicago for 1323 dollars with sixty day completion. Coal contract to Peavey Elevator Co at 5.59 per ton. signs to warn drivers and limit cattle. Also new Omaha road time card. Eastbound 8 am, Sioux Falls 12 50 pm. return at 7 30 pm.
John Hare, 65, of a potato farm south of town, was kicked in the stomach when his horse panicked while he tried to free the lines. He died Friday morning after internals injuries. A separate report notes John Wilde was severely injured mowing hay 13 miles northwest of town.
Mayor Fullerton presided as Wm. Koch and Jos. McLaughlin took seats following a recent special election. The session covered sidewalks streets and routine business while detailing a $1,212.70 sewer improvement bill listing numerous contractors and payments.
Montgomery Ward & Co of Chicago displayed two advertising cars in Montgomery for a grain palace event. J A Pickering hosted a concert from a car door for 700 to 800 spectators at the Milwaukee yards. He then gave an on street demonstration of the horseless carriage before the cars moved to Aberdeen on freight.
Francis Jones and Billy Marble star in In Old Madrid at the Grand opera house drawing a small audience due to high prices. The familiar drama, once titled The Prince of Liars, features rich costumes and elaborate sets. Jones sings, Miss Watson accompanies piano, and the troupe travels to Salem after the show.
