South Dakota soldiers were discharged last Thursday and began returning home. At the university, athletics gain emphasis this year with a strong football program and plans for a soldiers reception and banquet. The Baptist convention opened with sermons, officer elections, and reports on missions and teacher training, as ministers outlined methods for soul winning and church work.
Minneapolis reports on the South Dakota regiment's mustering out and homeward transport coordination. A $3225 per man railroad contract with Northern Pacific will move the unit from San Francisco to Oakes, arriving Oct 14 at 6 am. The feeding plan costs $5,000 and will feed troops free on the trip. Corporal Larrabee died of smallpox, and marching disagreements at Aberdeen were resolved. The regiment plans a homeward parade and college athletic enthusiasm grows with female supporters and basket teams.
The Woman's Foreign Mission session met at 2 PM Friday, opening with a devotional led by Mrs. C. F. Hackett of Parker. Mrs. A. G. Hislop delivered a paper on ministerial wives aiding missionary enthusiasm, followed by Hackett's address. Emma Swartz, state secretary for the Western Women’s Baptist Foreign Missionary Society, reported on state work and urged circles to boost interest with map exercises and missionary photos. Else sang a sacred solo. Rev. J. M. Daniels presented the Christian Education report, and Prof. A. W. Norton spoke on education, stressing scholar responsibility and diligent study.
President Graham pushes for a new Dakota University building as chapel exercises and crowded rooms prove high attendance. Faculty adjust to larger classes and student societies elect officers while football drills on the grounds promise strong competition for the coming season.
An executive committee met to finalize plans for the soldiers reception on Saturday afternoon. Mayor Fullerton Geo A Silsby and H L Bras will escort the Mitchell boys from Aberdeen to Mitchell. The group may travel by special train to bring the companies to the south part of the state. Provisions and collections for the reception are to be organized by ward committees: First ward J H Nolt and Luke Richards. Second ward Dan Tenney and B S Barnard. Third ward David Brown and C H Kibbee. Fourth ward Dr S J Moore and W H McKeel.
R M Spink of Lead sent The Republican views of a rich Black Hills gold mine near Deadwood. Discovered by Otto Grantz the vein runs about a foot deep, 20 feet wide and 75 feet long. Ore reportedly reaches $120000 per ton as development continues. Grantz, once a peddler, mined a thick gold piece two inches wide and hand-sized.
An Alexandria Herald item says a well known Mitchell man took a hunting trip with a lady friend, drove forty miles, stopped for lunch, and after horses ran away the pair walked to the nearest house until a team could fetch them home. Residents along Rose dale and Worthen tease Friday as unlucky for hunting.
At the annual YMCA meeting on Saturday evening the new officers were chosen. President Gee H. Grace, vice president H. C. Tapp, secretary W. A Barber, treasurer C. W. Gillis. Ralph Huyck named organist. Next meeting of officers set for next Saturday evening at the rooms.
Rural Davison county teachers met with Supt Browne on Saturday to organize their work for the coming year. They arranged with The Republican to conduct an educational column in the daily and weekly issues of the paper.
