Homecoming of volunteers amid rain at Mitchell Hotel

Immense crowd at the depot welcomed the South Dakota volunteers after a rain soaked journey from Aberdeen. The Mitchell hosted a late banquet with 75 guests, decorations, and music by Rathbun's orchestra, as families embraced returning soldiers. Some names and absences noted include Major R C Warne and Sgt Henry Tunis. Fred Hazleton and Patrick Maney were delayed or ill.

Grand Homecoming Reception for South Dakota Volunteers

The Opera House hosted a grand welcome for South Dakota volunteers and Spanish-American War soldiers, led by the Sons of Veterans and the W A C. Speakers lauded their conduct, with Geo A Silsby praising their 126 days on the firing line and President McKinley’s praise. A wreath for Jay A. Smith and a patriotic program followed as crowds packed the hall in Davison County.
