An immense crowd filled Mitchell's Corn Palace as Phinney's Band headlined two grand concerts. Report praises the musical program, decor, and crowd turnout, noting the Band's French piece Les Girondins drew strong acclaim and encores followed by other selections.
The building emptied after a first crowd, then a second large turnout was admitted in thirty minutes for another concert. Street music entertained those outside while the State Band greeted arriving trains, aided by the Plankinton band and the Scotland band from Bryan.
Local business men spend busy week decorating storefronts with corn and grain art. Nobie Shaw Chas Ferguson Narrath Healy L O Gale and D W Burright feature intricate designs including carpets stars and animal forms in red yellow and white corn and bunting to attract visitors.
The fusionists plan speeches with two orators on Thursday evening. Governor C. Cooper, former Wisconsin resident now in West Superior, will speak at the sourds house. Marion Butler, populist senator from North Carolina, will address Mt. Vernon to bolster fusionist efforts led by John Pease.
About 300 people from Chamberlain Woonsocket and nearby towns arrived by rail to Mitchell to view the corn palace and attend a two hour Phinney’s band concert. The program featured a children’s drill Miss Coghlan singing Maude Silsby Nichols at the piano and a cake walk by Imogene Cowhick and Glen Rowley drawing a large crowd.
Mitchell drew the biggest audience yet at the corn palace and Bryan demonstration with a constant throng on the streets. Phisney's band played three times at the exposition building with the huge hall packed to the doors, and the evening concert featured encores and strong performances of The Merry Wives of Windsor Pagliacci and Cavalleria Rusticana.
The program delighted the audience with a military drill by 33 young ladies and generous applause for the band. Miss Coghlan sang in both afternoon and evening concerts, prompting encore responses. Imogene Cowhbick and Glen Rowley performed a cake walk to enthusiastic reception.
William Jennings Bryan spoke on the money question and, after a spectator threw a silver dollar into the stand to bolster the state campaign fund, he handed the coin to the committee and urged Democrats to contribute. Populists criticized the move as unbecoming for a presidential candidate and collectors had already canvassed the audience before the speech.
Confetti was introduced at Mitchell Friday evening amid harmless revelry. W N Day Col Gick Woods W J Healey and others led the fun as streets resembled a snowstorm. Some revelers tossed it from the corn palace gallery triggering a quick police stoppage.
The Gazette editor Whitcher faced accusations of a vile slur aimed at Republicans during yesterday afternoon’s Bryan speech. Reportedly heard from the speaker’s stand were remarks urging vigilance for pickpockets and alleging Republicans were present. Critics claim this is the editor’s second insult to the party, previously tied to Gov Roosevelt’s Mitchell visit.
Hon. A G Wolfenbarger speaks on the prohibition of the liquor traffic to Mitchell and vicinity on Saturday evening October 13. All are invited to hear this eloquent and forceful speaker.
