Kingman County Surveyor Looped in Cord Method Chronical
The Kingman Leader-Courier recounts an early Kansas county surveyor who owned no instruments and could not use them. He measured land by stepping with a cord tied to his ankles, moving one fifth of a rod per step, tracing lines as he walked. The rawhide cord stretched in morning dew, making morning steps longer and yields varied between dawn and dusk, leaving mismatched quarter sections and irritations over old surveys.
