Milwaukee Road passenger service ordered between Mitchell and Chamberlain

The Sioux Falls Press reports the railroad commission ordered the Chicago Milwaukee and St Paul Railway to run a regular passenger train each way daily except Sundays between Mitchell and Chamberlain starting November 15 1897. The decision followed a hearing on October 14 1897 showing the line lacked adequate passenger service and that a dedicated passenger train could be profitable, with projected annual net revenue above 8000 for the carrier.

Annual Chrysanthemum Show at Grand Opera House

The Episcopal church hosts Mitchell Greenshouse chrysanthemum display at the Grand Opera House Thursday through Saturday with afternoon and evening shows. Local talent including a juvenile band will perform, booths offer refreshments, and a final evening dance closes the series. Excursion rail rates are hoped for. Schlitz Brewing chooses Mitchell as distribution point. plans for a large ice house are under review.

Vote of the Counties Shapes Political Battle in Fourth Circuit

The report shows Judge Smith defeating Goodykoontz and Fellows across several counties with strong Smith majorities in Davison and Jerauld. Totals from seven counties give Smith 2,195 votes, Goodykoontz 1,439, and Fellows 579, yielding a Smith plurality of 769 as the political shift reshapes state races.

Beach and Bowers Minstrels at the Grand Opera House

Reich and Bowers presented a minstrel show featuring humorous songs antics and a Uncle Tom's Cabin travesty. The act included Knetzkes club swinging Hays and Esterbrook as musical kings and Beach’s trained dogs. An electrical outage forced reliance on three large footlights but the crowd of about 350 reflected solid local interest.

Schubert Symphony Club Presented Fine Mitchell Concert

The Schubert Symphony Club and Ladies Quartetté gave a superb program at Masonic hall Saturday night. The Eastern Star Lodge deserves praise for presenting one of the best concert companies seen in Mitchell in years. The performance drew high praise for its quality and artistry.

Schubert Concert Impresses Mitchell Audience

Traveling west, the Schuberts delivered an excellent program with strong solo and ensemble numbers. Miss Delaney and Mrs Purcell impressed as soloists while Little Tommy Purcell, eight, charmed with violin, recitations, and singing. The crowd gave enthusiastic encores, and the company earned a warm reception.

Baptist Church Progress Shown in State Report

The Baptist Church Society in the state reports strong annual progress led by Dr. T. M. Shanefelt. Despite financial strain, $2,100 raised to gain $8,000 from Home Missionary Society, 41 missionaries served 52 churches and 38 out stations, 104 churches total with 5,375 members, 195 baptized and 143 by letter. Four Chicago students aided, 30 baptisms and one new church. Koch buys Hammer building, upgrades west First street property, improving hotel and hardware store appearance.
