Mitchell Odd Fellows hosted visiting brethren from Letcher Alexandria and Fulton for initiation and higher degree work. Four new members were inducted while a banquet followed with Rebekahs providing supper, dancing ensued with Nelson orchestra, and Miss Clara Thropp entertained with acting. The lodge plans to strengthen before the Grand Lodge meeting next May.
The Republican praises Miss Clara Thropp as Nora in A Doll's House at the opera house. A strong, realistic performance shows Nora's shifts from joy to sorrow and the husband’s condescension, drawing applause for Thropp's varied portrayal and stage presence. Frederic supports the cast.

Wm. W. Mannix of Milwaukee purchases the local opera house plans major upgrades including new electric chandelier a rear addition side boxes improved ventilation and exits with aim to attract patrons and residents. He also announces wholesale and retail liquor business to occupy the Red Front building upon vacancy with immediate start.
A businessman recalls a Halloween prank from a year ago when his front gate was stolen. Two boys carried the gate back and received a quarter as a reward, inspiring a plan for a repeat return next year. The man wonders if the gain will grow yearly as youth prove savvy about money.
W. W. Mannix of Milwaukee has taken control of the Grand Opera House and plans significant, permanent improvements. He has nearly mapped out the work and will modify the building to increase its worth and usability, including changing the entrance from the corner.
John Christenson a laborer for the Milwaukee road was struck on the head by a falling 30 foot iron piece during windmill construction near Ethan. The blow fractured his skull briefly paralyzing his left limb. he was treated by Dr. Bobb and sent to Vermilion for recovery, a close call described as miraculous escape from death.
A county board record shows tax policy achievements. Commissioner Kress proposed letting back personal taxes up to 1896 be paid without penalty, yielding an estimated 5000 to 7000 dollars into the treasury. The board also reduced the 1899 tax levy from 8510 to 4610 mills, about half of the previous year.
Rev. J. F. Bradley has moved to Elkton to preside over the local Methodist church for the coming year. He traveled by horse and buggy to visit his charges in the district, planning to use the team for travel and duties in his tenure.
