Gen Gordon Lecture Captivates Grand Opera House Crowd
General John B Gordon spoke for two hours on the Last Days of the Confederacy at the Grand Opera House. The crowd listened intently as Gordon, with personal Civil War experience, recounted battles and campaigns, praised the flag and his country. Dr Graham of the University introduced him gracefully and the audience remained spellbound by the general's eloquence.

Indians Thrashed by University Eleven at Athletic Park
Crow Creek Indians were outmatched by Mitchell’s University team in a football game at Athletic Park. Kingsbury Maxon and Wells starred for the visitors, while Tyndall of the Carlisle squad watched from the Indians’ side. The score at halftime was 27 to 0, final tally 51 to 0, as the Indians failed to breach a stout Mitchell line. In a separate incident, a man believed he was attacked in his woodshed, only to learn he had struck his head on a partition he built himself aided by his wife with a lantern.

Remains of Taylor Mourned as Accident Not Robbery
The Milwaukee road death of William Taylor was ruled an ordinary accident. His body, shipped to Sioux City, yielded missing express money and two 350 orders sewn into his clothes. Mrs. Taylor and a companion sought traces. Boyce and James Murphy helped recover the items. Trial calendar updates follow, with McBride v. Mitchell matters postponed. Helwig v. Disbrow listed for December. other cases adjourned or moved.

Short Term Of Court In Davison County
Attys who waited for the court to open noted an unusually slim term in Davison county. Six to eight lawyers were present as Sheriff Swindler opened court and Judge Smith west began the calendar. Two criminal cases from last term the state versus Parker and the state versus Titze and Titze were withdrawn on motion by States Attorney Winsor. No jury was drawn as no ready cases existed, and several new cases since have been filed requiring a jury, postponed to the May term.

Canvassed Election Returns In County Special Session
County commissioners met in special session Monday to canvass the vote. C F Drake was named temporary chairman as Kress and Moore abstained due to candidacy. The recount produced a few minor changes to the results.

Remarkable Crime Recalled in Gov Lee Pardons Kephart
A Sioux Falls correspondent recalls the 1896 Erickson robbery near Flandreau Moody County. Clyde Kephart confessed along with James Smith and Gust Erening, leading to Smiths conviction and death in 1897. Later proof showed Smith and Erening innocent. Kephart’s confession was false and tied to a disturbed mind.
