Winifred McVay of Dakota University captured first place in the tenth annual intercollegiate oratorical contest held at the Grand opera house, with Emery M. Lyman of Yankton college taking second. The event drew about 700 attendees as judges announced the results amid a celebratory Mitchell University crowd.
In a poorly played game Wednesday Yankton defeated Mitchell 6 to 0 in the base ball championship. Balcom and Kellam led Yankton to first place while Blanchard and Lauson of Mitchell, Walton and Squires of Yankton earned top placements in field events. Lyman won the running high jump. Sullivan won the pole vault with 9 feet 1 inch. Frye of Vermillion won the two mile bicycle race.
The YMCA conference featured a packed athletic program at the university grounds. Vermillion’s Frye won the half mile bicycle race with Yankton’s Rosstuescher taking third, while Yankton’s Balcom defeated Walton in tennis and Sullivan of Yankton won the shot put. Mitchell’s Mitchell University event drew large crowds as Brookings and Dakota University clubs clashed in a spirited baseball game highlighted by Rogan and Robinson for Mitchell.
The third annual Young Men's and Young Women's Christian association convention brings delegates from nearly every South Dakota college to the University of South Dakota. Sessions in the chapel and union devotional meet, talks by C V Vickrey and Rev John Comin, and papers on missionary work engage attendees. a large Grand opera house crowd is noted.
