As season peaks, prices are driven down to meet regional clothing needs and attract customers with notable novelties in standard suit makes.
A worn but well finished boy’s suit offered at four dollars and twenty five cents. The item emphasizes the suit’s style and perfect tailoring suitable for a young wearer.
Mitchells Musical People presented Pinafore at the Grand opera house Tuesday evening in nautical setting with a 25 member chorus. Soloists include A H Pehrson Carl Hover and Florence Gregory with strong performances by Miss Becker Miss Goodykoontz and C W Downey directing stage and chorus.
A new Eastern Star chapter was organized Saturday under grand patronage with J H Scriven appointed deputy to institute the lodge assisted by Mrs O H Werneicke of Minneapolis. Officers include Anna M Williams as Worthy Matron E B Bracy as Worthy Patron Matilda Smith as Asst Matron Anna Levinger as Treasurer Ella Downey as Secretary and several other officers. The group began with good membership and aims to join the Masonic lodge as a strong auxiliary. a charter may be granted by the grand lodge in Sioux Falls.
Memorial services were held Sunday at 3 PM in the court house under the department commander with G A R and W R C members marching from the post room. Commander McLain led, a choir of named members sang, Mrs. Lee played, and Rev. Burleigh and Rev. McConnell offered prayers and remarks. Address by Rev. A C Stevens praised by attendees amid chilly weather. Also noted is a lost horse and pony with contact info in Plankinton, South Dakota.
The University celebrates Misa Winifred McVay winning first in the state oratorical contest with a downtown procession. About 200 marchers in blue and white parade from the Grand opera house to the courthouse where an impromptu program praises the orator and the institution. The Republican notes large receipts for the oratorical and athletic events, while local ads extol Dr King’s New Discovery for coughs and consumption with free trial bottles at S. H. Scallin’s.
The executive committee finished business and praised the meeting as one of the best in years. Nils Hyde of Vermillion was cleared of intentional plagiarism, Yankton won first in 1896 with Mitchell second, and prize pro rata of 17.50 went to Geo. Potter for the prior year. New officers were elected: Walton president, Besancon vice president, Bennett secretary treasurer. Next meeting will be in Brookings with dates TBD.
Mrs Halverson arrived from Canton and visits Mitchell before returning to China next spring. She and sister Mrs Bigler run a free dispensary and carry on missionary work with strong dedication. Halverson recounts exciting experiences from her time abroad.
Davison county circuit court began a light term with 14 civil cases likely to remain untried and four criminal prosecutions to proceed. Walter Hamilton faces burglary charges for a break in at Mrs. Alexander’s home after a prolonged jail term awaiting trial. John Havlatko, and son, stand charged with possessing stolen goods. Tom Lytle is accused of a murderous assault on a Black man in late winter with intent to kill.
